GM Alexey Sarana won Titled Tuesday on January 11 with a score of 9.5/11, a week after finishing in second place. He won on tiebreaks over second place GM Aram Hakobyan and third place Kacper Piorun. The top 10 was rounded out by seven players on nine points, with the fourth going to GM Dmitry Andreikin.
629 players took part in this week’s Titled Tuesday, the second consecutive week with 600 participants or more. The tournament format was, as usual, an 11-round Swiss with a 3+1 time control.
Live broadcast of this Tuesday’s tournament, hosted by GM Benjamin Bok. Bok was on top of Sarana’s matches early on.
Sarana was blazing hot for nine laps starting with 9/9 and chasing the perfect score from GM Hikaru Nakamura last August. Despite a loss in round 10 and a tie in round 11, Sarana gave the best tiebreaker score among the leaders as she played at the top of the field throughout the tournament.
He also played against both that tied him, including a sixth-round win over Piorun.
Sarana then opened up a full lead on the field by beating Andreikin on round nine. Andreikin played the aggressive King’s Indian Attack and was unable to break through and eventually lost.
However, when it came time for Sarana to face Hakobyan, the last player emerged victorious and brought Sarana right into the tournament lead. Fortunately for Sarana, Hakobyan also drew in the final round.
