Kingston King dug deep last month to win over C&D and Altumanina showed significant improvement when he finished second in that race, but the debutant was chasing FAZAYTE ran well last month in a much stronger competition than this one over hurdles and if he jumps well he could have too much class for this field. Altumanina is second choice.

It’s easy to make a strong case for Clondaw Promise, who has won his last two and races lightly over fences, but a slight preference is for BALLYCROSS, who has yet to win ahead of Nicky Henderson, but ran well a year ago when he was fresh and coming back well from his last layoff. One Fer Mamma moves up the ranks after last month’s breakthrough win, but still has low mileage.

Dan Skelton’s REILLY was flipped at short notice during its last performance in November, but after the winner came up at Christmas, that piece of shape now looks a lot better than it did back then. He’s been invited to open his account today, but Contemplatemyfaith won’t go down without a fight, while Irish points winner Barrowdale is an interesting prospect for novice hurdles.

A market move for Irish points winner Diakosaint could give this race a different complexion, but different GREEN Vault has an excellent chance of completing a quick double. The topweight won with authority on his handicap debut at Ayr on Sunday and competes at the same level here.

Eaton Collina has lost a very useful 5lbs since his encouraging third at Ffos Las last May and remains lightly played but may be worth giving another chance to HEART OF STEEL (nap), who last time found a Haydock Class 2 race too hot, but didn’t run nearly as badly as his eventual loss of 31 liters would suggest and is now just 1 pound higher than when he won at Carlisle in October.

This can go to the winner of Wetherby bumper BILLAM’S LEGACY, who made a promising season/hurdle debut at Wincanton on Boxing Day and should build on that achievement here. Former Flat racer Rock Of Fame ran very well when she was placed on a large to novice hurdle on good to soft ground in November, but we can’t be sure she will cope with today’s slower conditions. Good-ground bumper winner Corey’s Courage also has to prove she can handle slow terrain.
