Novel to mark victory

Race 10 round Santa Anita is the $200,000 California Cup Oaks for three-year-old fillies over a mile on the grass and it is the horse in stable one, great novel, who can take advantage of that inside draw and win the prize for John Sadler and his team.

This filly finished second and third respectively in two races on from sea last summer before impressively breaking her maiden tag in a six-furlong Maiden Special Weight on this October course.

After settling down behind the leaders Joe Bravo, she cleared three wide corners for the home and stretched to win at three-and-a-quarter lengths on the line, all the while giving the impression there could be a lot more to come.

Two second-placed efforts in Black Type events on the dirt at from sea and Los Alamitos followed that win and on both occasions she walked with great honors. This flight, with that inner draw, should be ideal, because it can be kept calm inside John Velazquez before slowing down to strike in a race that should be perfect for her.

Big run expected from Carlo

The penultimate race for Santa Anita is the $150,000 California Cup Sprint Stakes over six furlongs on the dirt and Brickyard Ride will be hard to beat here but he hasn’t run since he finished on the field in a Grade 2 at from sea in Nov. So, with that in mind, it’s worth siding with prince charles, who has been very good in his last two starts and has enough power to win this.

this son of coil, who was a dual graded stakes winner on this course, rarely seems to have a bad race as he has finished in the first two of 14 of his 22 starts and is a three-time winner here, one over course and distance, with the other two over an extended six furlongs.

He certainly knows the track well and has been in good shape lately as well. After finishing second here in an Allowance Optional Claimer in October 2020, he was then off track for over a year but returned with a good heart with another close second in a similar competition. He hit positivity (who resists again here) in a Black Type race on from sea in November and he has plenty to do.

There is value in Nardinic

A field of 13 goes to the post for the $150,000 Sunshine Millions Filly and Mare Sprint, which is Race 8 on the map at Saint NicholasA. A case can be made for the horse with double figures, nardini, who finished a close second behind the re-opposing Legs galore in this race last year and can take revenge this time.

This six-year-old mare recorded impressive speed figures in 2021 and is signed off in stable four so that she can be the first on the run. Legs galore, which this time is in stable 12.

Wouldn’t be surprised if Nardinic turn the mold into what is a competitive race.
