LSU’s on-field coaching staff has reached its final step as the Tigers are about to hire Louisiana-born Cortez Hankton as the next wide receivers coach.
The move, which is expected to come together for a few weeks, has been done, according to On3 Matt Zenitz.
A former NFL receiver from 2003-2008, Hankton grew up in New Orleans and spent the last four seasons in Georgia, where he helped build one of the most consistent college programs in the country. He brings winning and now championship experience to this LSU coaching staff, which has already filled its coordinator and position coach spots with the 2021 season coming to a close on Monday night.
The Tigers failed to announce Hankton’s loan with Georgia Alabama playing in the National Championship, a game the Bulldogs would win 33-18.
Prior to his four seasons with the Bulldogs, Hankton spent three seasons at Dartmouth College before being hired by Vanderbilt as receiver coach in 2015. During his time in Georgia, the Bulldogs put together three consecutive seasons of 11 wins and two national championships.
Meanwhile, Hankton has coached a number of elite receivers who have gone to the pros, including Terry Godwin, Mecole Hardman and Riley Ridley. Most recently, he helped George Pickens make a future high NFL draft pick.
At LSU, Hankton will walk into one of the deepest reception rooms in the SEC next season, led by junior star Kayshon Boutte, who was well on his way to an All-American nod before an ankle injury hampered his sophomore season. Despite five recipients entering the transfer portal, this is still a very deep room, with up-and-coming sophomores Brian Thomas, Malik Nabers and Chris Hilton all showing great flashes as freshmen.
The Tigers also recently received a pledge from Kyren Lacy, a wide receiver for ULL transfer, adding another explosive weapon to a group that has lost five players to the portal.
Tight end Jack Bech was also one of the more consistent options in the game for catching passes and will likely be used in numerous ways in the future.
