Australia Day in our shire: something for everyone | Parkes Champion Post

A full day of community activities is planned in the Parkes Shire as we gather on Wednesday January 26 to celebrate Australia Day and share the stories that come from our diverse backgrounds and experiences.

Parkes’ Australia Day Ambassador this year is internationally acclaimed concert soloist, flutist Jane Rutter des Arts et Lettres, who will attend official events in Parkes and Peak Hill. Get to know her a little in the full story.

There’s something for everyone all day long, so here’s your Parkes Shire Council guide:


It all starts at 7am with a community walk starting at 7am in Cooke Park, followed by a complimentary breakfast.

  • 7:00am – 1:00pm 4 Ball Best Ball (4BBB) at Parkes Golf Club.
  • 07:30 – 11:00 Over the Hill, Kite flying at Northparkes Oval.
  • 9am – 3.30pm Social bowls and competitions at the Railway Bowling Club – visitors welcome.
  • 10am All Australian Car Display at Cooke Park.
  • 10.00-17.00 Mini carnival at Parkes Bowling and Sports Club. $20 per player, which includes a barbecue lunch.
  • 10:30am Live entertainment by the Parkes Shire Band at Cooke Park.
  • 11am Official ceremony in Cooke Park including Ambassador Ms Jane Rutter speech, Citizen of the Year, Community, Cultural and Sporting Awards presentation.
  • 14.00 – 18.00 Take a dip in the Parkes Aquatic Centre.
  • 5:00 PM – 9:00 PM Enjoy the sunset at the Parkes Showground with the Harness Racing and the return of the Golden Yabby Races at 7:15 PM (registration 6:00 PM – 6:45 PM).
  • 6 – 7:30 pm Croquet – come and play Aussie Pirates at the Parkes Bowling & Sports Club, equipment will be provided.


  • 7.30 AM Flag Raising in Memorial Park and presentation by special guest, Adam Courtenay.
  • 08:00 Free breakfast in the hall, followed by fun competitions and Australia Day Certificates.


  • 7:30am Community breakfast at Memorial Park.
  • Official Ceremony at 8am – Australia Day Ambassador will be in attendance for the Official Awards ceremony, followed by the Best Aussie Outfit and Best Aussie Hat Awards.
  • 2pm Free entry to Peak Hill Pool, free sizzle sausage at 5:30pm.


Due to the tragic start of 2022 in Tullamore, there will be no ceremony. The flags are raised.

  • 2:00 PM – 6:00 PM Free entry to the Tullamore Pool.


  • 7:30 am Join the community breakfast at Berryman Oval.
  • 9AM Official ceremony with presentation of the Citizen and Sporting awards.
  • 2:00 PM – 6:00 PM Free entry to the Trundle Pool.
