- England lost the 2021-22 Ashes series by a 5-0 margin to Australia
- The position of England head coach Chris Silverwood has been up for debate since the end of the series
- Nasser Hussain sees Ricky Ponting as the perfect replacement for Silverwood
A 5-0 Ashes defeat to Australia has cast many question marks over the English test team’s ability. While skipper Joe Root has come under fire for his leadership, England head coach Chris Silverwood has also been in the spotlight. Nasser Hussain, a former England captain, wants Silverwood replaced by none other than Australian cricketing great Ricky Ponting.
Ponting has not yet been the head coach of an international team, but does have experience coaching the Indian Premier League (IPL) franchise Delhi Capitals. The ex-Australia captain was also part of the support staff of the Australian men’s national team during the 2021 UAE T20 World Cup.
More than his experience, it is Ponting’s cricketing acumen that has impressed Hussain the most, and the English cricketing great sees huge merit in this potential change.
Speak with SportsMailHussain sympathized with Silverwood who has had to play both the coach and selector roles. But after seeing Silverwood make some blunders in the squad selection, Hussain wants the England head coach to ‘keep going’.
“I love Chris Silverwood and half of his reign has gone into Covid-19 bubbles. I have a lot of sympathy for that… But too many mistakes have been made and Silverwood is responsible for the extra responsibility he has for the selection. You can look at the system, but county cricket doesn’t make you bat first in Brisbane and leave (Stuart) Broad and (James) Anderson on a green Gabba pitch,” Hussain told SportMail.
“You can’t take the same management team to the Caribbean and tell them to carry on as if nothing happened. It is with a heavy heart that I say leave Silverwood,” he added.
“An alternative? I love Ricky Ponting. Everything I see about him impresses me. He may not have a lot of international coaching experience, but he has a great cricket brain. There are a few – unfortunately not many English. If Ponting is available he would be perfect. He cares about cricket and cricketers, he knows the game through and through and has gravitas,” Hussain continued.
A number of changes are expected to be made to the England Test team, be it the roster of players or the roles of a few. The England team’s next assignment is a 5-game T20I series against the West Indies.
