Naomi Osaka, Roger Federer: Levels of Social Media Abuse of Tennis Stars Uncovered

Naomi Osaka was the tennis player who received the highest number of offensive tweets in 2021, according to a study by Pickswise.

To highlight what tennis stars are dealing with on social media, Pickswise analyzed every tweet sent to the top players over the past 12 months.

Osaka, 24, was the most abused tennis player on Twitter in 2021, receiving 32,415 abusive messages.

Osaka made headlines last year when she refused to participate in media duties at the French Open and subsequently withdrew from the tournament due to the uproar caused by her decision.

The four-time Grand Slam winner then stepped away from the field for four months after the US Open in September.

She is now back in competition and through to the third round of the Australian Open.

Serena Williams received the highest number of abusive tweets behind Osaka, receiving a total of 18,118 toxic messages.

Like Osaka, Williams missed much of 2021 and withdrew from the US Open and the Olympics through injury.

Andy Murray was the most abused male tennis player in the top ten, receiving 11,732 negative tweets.

After achieving international fame following her unlikely win at the US Open in September, Raducanu placed fourth in Pickswise’s study, receiving 10,094 abusive messages on Twitter.

The 19-year-old was the center of a storm at Wimbledon when she withdrew from her round of 16 against Ajla Tomljanović with breathing difficulties.

Novak Djokovic, the number one of the men’s world, came fifth on the list, receiving 8,439 toxic tweets in 2021, but Pickswise also noted that he had received a further 7,354 messages between January 4 and 10, 2022.

This came after the Serb caused a stir ahead of the Australian Open, where he arrived for the Grand Slam in early January but failed to meet the country’s federal coronavirus requirements.

Djokovic had been given a medical exemption to play as an unvaccinated player in Melbourne, but he later admitted incorrect information had been included on his immigration forms.

After an unsuccessful appeals process, the 20-time Grand Slam winner was deported from Australia and returned home to Serbia.

Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal were also subject to social media hate in 2021. Federer collected more than 4,200 negative tweets, while Nadal received just over 3,500 abusive tweets.

Stefanos Tsitsipas, Alexander Zverev and Simona Halep were also named in the top 10, receiving 4,084, 3,454 and 3,181 abusive tweets, respectively.
