Redbirds Sweep Weekly MVC Swimming & Diving Awards

ST. LOUIS- The Illinois state swim and dive team took home the Missouri Valley Conference’s weekly swim and dive awards this week after great performances from sophomores Diana Walker, who was named Swimmer of the Week, and freshman Eva Reyes, who was named Diver of the Week.

This is the first time since January 2019 and the first time during Caitlin Hamilton‘s tenure as head coach that the Redbirds have won the conference awards.

Walker took two individual victories and anchored the 200-yard freestyle relay in a narrow win, winning both the 200-yard freestyle and 500-yard freestyle individual last weekend. In an extremely close 200-yard freestyle race, Walker held onto the UNI swimmer with a 0.01 lead, finishing with a time of 1:55.61. The sophomore closed out the first day of the Redbirds’ dual with UNI anchoring the 200-yard freestyle relay in a win with a time of 1:38.18 compared to the Panthers’ time of 1:38.27.

On day two, Walker took another individual win, first in the 500-yard freestyle with a time of 5:10.83, nearly four seconds ahead of second place. Walker’s efforts this weekend played a key role in Illinois State’s team victory over UNI.

This is Walker’s first MVC Swimmer of the Week honors.

Reyes continued her impressive season for the ‘Birds by taking two more wins at Horton Pool last weekend. Unbeaten in her home pool in her debut season for Illinois State, Reyes won the 3-meter dive with a combined score of 290.93 and the 1-meter dive with a combined score of 263.85 to help the Redbirds win the team victory over UNI. achieve.

With her two wins this weekend, Reyes has racked up six first-place performances this season.

Reyes has earned the MVC Diver of the Week title four times this season.
