Stevenson, ND Bowling advances to sectionals

Evanston Boys Bowling won the regional Stevenson, but the host Patriots are also moving to sectionals after finishing second on Saturday, January 15 with a total of 6,150 pins at Fairhaven Lanes in Mundelein.

Evanston scored a total of 6,302 pins to win the regional title.

Niles Notre Dame finished third with 5,802 to qualify for sectionals along with Glenbrook North (5795 pins).

Only the top four teams will advance to sectionals, which are Saturday, January 22 at 9:00 AM at Bowlero, 1558 E North Ave., Glendale.

Unfortunately, team-wise it was the end of the line for New Trier (5,502 pins), Deerfield (5.484), Loyola Academy (5,459), Taft (5,271), Niles West (4,834), St. Viator (4,564), Niles North (4,272 ) and von Steuben (2,272).

Individuals eligible for Journal area sectionals included Jonathan Tomasiello (1235) and Ethan Guttschow (1176) of Loyola Academy. Niles North, New Trier, Deerfield, Taft and Von Steuben also had individual qualifiers.

Loyola’s other five bowlers who entered played in five games or fewer of the six rounds. Tomasiello was strong with games of 203, 235 and 236 to go with scores of 171, 192 and 198. Guttschow threw 222 and 215 games, but his other four scores were between 170-199.

Stevenson’s Jackson Sher, a sophomore, won medals with an incredible score of 1,401. Sher pitched games of 191, 245, 258, 222, 259 and 226 to win first against teammate Ender Starr (1,380). Starr rolled 215, 236, 237, 236, 244 and 212.

Stevenson’s other bowlers were Jacob Sroka (223, 216, 236, 203, 173, 157 – 1208 series), Braden Kunik (224, 210, 148, 214, 138 – 934), Matthew McGowan (202, 181, 176, 166, 202 — 927), Eric Vondrak (160) and Jacob Heald (140).

Notre Dame was led by the duo of Austin Kennedy (244, 222, 188, 192, 162, 192 – 1,210 series) and Jake Ramirez (204, 183, 177, 163, 262, 214 – 1,203). The rest of the Dons lineup included Patrick San Roman (258, 193, 189, 191, 173 – 1004), Alex Caselli (177, 222, 201, 185, 184 – 969), Daniel Gutierrez (163, 201, 188 , 190 , 169 – 911), Ryan Hodorvych (140, 174 – 314) and Nicholas Massaro (191).

St. Viator was led by Andrew Drozd, who threw five-of-six games and had an 877 series. His top rounds were 233, 207 and 202. Two Lions bowlers threw 812 runs over five games. Kane Snyder threw a game of 201 and Brendan Oleksak threw a game of 201 as other St. Viator highlights.

Niles West’s best bowler in the region was Hans Gartner (1,035), who threw games of 210, 138, 172, 138, 195 and 182. Ryan Luecker also had a run of 1,005, but only had a high score of 181.
