Sycamores hit the road for IUPUI Tri-Meet, Dual Meet with Southern Illinois

TERRE HAUTE, Ind. – It’s a busy weekend for swimming and diving in the state of Indiana as the Sycamores will compete in the IUPUI Tri-Meet on Friday, before making the trip to Southern Illinois for a double encounter on Saturday.

The Sycamores are in their first action since January 7, when ISU fell to the road in a double encounter in Purdue, but several outcasts led the team’s efforts in the game against the Boilermakers. Senior Emily Webb and freshmen Daniela Orta Castaneda won the Missouri Valley Conference Swimmer and Diver of the Week awards from the conference.

Webb claimed the win in the women’s 200-yard freestyle event. Orta Castaneda was the Sycamores’ top diver in the women’s 3M event, finishing third overall in the 1M event to claim her first weekly recognition.

In addition to Webb’s win and Orta Castaneda’s performance, Chloe Farro continued a strong start to her 2022 season, taking victory in the women’s 100-yard freestyle event, while Rhiannon Wozny took more than five seconds off her season-best time on the 1000-yard freestyle field with a time of 10:39.02.

The sights of the Sycamores begin to look ahead to the 2022 Missouri Valley Championships, held February 16-19 at the Northern Iowa campus in Iowa City, Iowa. head coach Josh Christensen hopes to use this weekend to continue the development of the team as they prepare for the championships.

“This weekend will provide us with a lot of quality competition opportunities as we prepare for the MVC Championships next month,” said Christensen. “Everyone will get different races over the two days and we will try to apply the things we worked on in training and continue to grow and learn individually and as a team.”

Friday’s encounter features two known opponents for the Sycamores this season, as ISU lined up against both IUPUI and Butler at the Indiana Intercollegiates earlier in October. The Sycamores finished third overall in the field with 12 teams, with their 356 overshadowing the point total by both IUPUI (222) and Butler (83) at the meet.

The Tri-Meet will be IUPUI’s first action in the pool since November 20, as their January 7-8 encounters against UIC and Cleveland State were canceled due to concerns about COVID within the program. The Jags currently hold an overall record of 5-3 on the season after opening the year with wins in five of their first six matchups. IUPUI has already surpassed Butler in their opening meeting in September (160-70), coming off a sixth-place finish in the 2021 House of Champions meeting in November.

Butler is also in his first action in 2022 as the Bulldogs complete their winter training journey in early January. The Bulldogs finished seventh overall at the 2021 House of Champions in November and are currently sixth among the Big East schools at this point in the season. Isabelle Petersen and Alani Hightower Bend lead the Bulldogs sprinters, while Kaelyn Crane and Olivia Klafta are among the squad’s best distance swimmers.

Saturday’s game in Southern Illinois will feature two of the top three teams in the Missouri Valley according to current rankings, with the Salukis just ahead of ISU. Sierra Forbord and Eden Girloanta led the freestyle squad of the year, while Celia Pulido is among the best all-around swimmers in the conference of the year.
