GREAT WHITE — Grand Blanc varsity baseball coach Kevin Hubbs has received the Coach of the Year award for helping take his program to new heights in 2021.
Hubbs, who led Grand Blanc to its first baseball state championship in school history last summer, was named Division 1 Overall Coach of the Year by the Michigan High School Baseball Coaches Association (MHSBCA) at its annual convention on January 14 and 15.
Although Hubbs was unable to attend the convention in Mount Pleasant, he nevertheless said he was delighted and humbled to receive the award.
“A few friends of mine texted me to let me know I got the award, and they returned the plaque to Grand Blanc,” he said. “There are so many great coaches who have won Coach of the Year, so it was an honor to even qualify.”
Under Hubbs, the Bobcats amassed a record of 33-11 in 2021 and battled through a difficult playoff trajectory with games against district rivals Vlissingen and Fenton. Grand Blanc defeated Portage Central 8-3 in the 2021 Division 1 state finals.
Hubbs praised his assistant coaches and players for their tenacity and building a great chemistry, saying he couldn’t have earned a Coach of the Year award without them.
“My assistant coaches are just amazing and have done a lot of work with the kids all year round,” he said. “The overall chemistry we built with the players is one of the things that gave us an edge.”
Hubbs, 39, began his career with Grand Blanc in the late 2000s through coaching in high school and basketball in the 8th grade. He later joined the Grand Blanc varsity football staff as an assistant coach before moving to baseball as JV head coach and then assistant varsity coach. He was named the head coach of Grand Blanc varsity baseball in 2017.
“I knew from a young age that I wanted to be a teacher and coach,” he said. “I love being around kids, giving back and building relationships with different members of the community through athletics.”
Hubbs graduated from Mount Morris (EA Johnson Memorial High School) in 2001, where he was a multisport athlete in football, baseball and wrestling. He also played college baseball at Saginaw Valley State University.
In addition to coaching, Hubbs teaches special education at Grand Blanc High School. His wife Laura teaches at Indian Hill Elementary School and his daughters attend school in the area.
Fresh off its championship round, Grand Blanc varsity baseball will return with several starters from last year’s team and an experienced pitching staff in 2022. The program currently ranks second in the state’s pre-season poll behind Orchard Lake St. Marys.
Grand Blanc opens its new season in April.
