Prime Volleyball League: Looking forward to this new challenge to play for Bengaluru Torpedoes: Rokhade

Vinayak Rokhade, one of the mainstays of the team, reflected on the mood in the camp, saying: “We are all very excited to perform in the tournament and give our best for the Bengaluru Torpedo team. Of course there will be a bio bubble situation, so we’d have to adapt to that, but I’m really looking forward to that too, because it would be a new challenge.”

He further stressed that this is a great opportunity for players from Karnataka and other parts of India to gain exposure playing with some of the most elite volleyball players from abroad. He said: “It will also be a great opportunity to learn from the foreign players in the tournament because they will have different playing styles. I hope to pick up a few things and become a better player.”

Vinayak, who started playing volleyball in 2007 when his school teachers in the Belgaum district of Karnataka approached him for his well-built physique, said it was the support he received in his budding days that allowed him to hone his skills as an international player.

“My parents always told me to take a chance and judge whether it was possible or not. They said there’s no point in repenting later in life because there might be an opportunity in the sport that you missed.” said Vinayak.

He made his international debut in 2013 when he was selected to the Junior Indian Team, and the following year he played for the U-21 Indian Team. In 2015, Vinayak received his first call-up to the senior Indian team and he represented the nation at the Asian Championship in Iran.

“It was an amazing feeling to represent the country and wear the Indian jersey. Representing India in volleyball was one of the most memorable highlights of my career,” he said. Another special moment in his career came in 2018 when he was part of the Karnataka squad that won the Senior Nationals title for the first time.

“Winning the Senior Nationals in 2018 was definitely a highlight of my career. We were the first Karnataka team to do this. I can never forget that moment, I couldn’t believe it then,” recalls Vinayak, who plays as setter.

Now his focus is on doing good for the Bengaluru Torpedo team and he is putting his experience behind the squad’s campaign in the Prime Volleyball League this season.

“We have prepared well and the team management has given us the best facilities to prepare for the season that will start in Kochi. Besides working on our game and building on the strategies, we have a good relationship as a team. These are certainly exciting times and we look forward to the new challenge,” he added.
