Tips for today’s horse racing Thursday 20 January

There’s a National Hunt card of seven races at Wincanton on Thursday afternoon, and our in-house tipster Steve Chambers has picked his best three bets on the card…

Reviewed in the mid 140s during his early career, Colin Tizzard’s WHITE MOON lately his handicap has plummeted as he struggled to get any kind of stroke on the track. However, after finishing fourth last in Wincanton with a score of 115, he has lost another 5 pounds and will take his shot at 110 on Thursday afternoon in the 2:15pm game. Tizzard is certainly on the lookout for his talent and has hit the cheeks today, but if he can find some form of his early career, he could outshine his rivals and duly take his first win in over three years.

Once sent a 6/1 shot for the Pertemps Final at the 2020 Cheltenham Festival, WELSH SAINT has lost his way since finishing 18th in that festival competition, but he will try to regain his best form when he lines up at 2:45 pm in Wincanton. After trying fences at the hands of Nicky Henderson, Welsh Saint has since fallen back on hurdles and is now trained by Sam Thomas, who is reaching for the blinkers today. He lost 5lbs last time for an average run at Haydock Park, but now that he’s at a mark of 123 he could take a punch with decent chances.

Rebecca Curtis would have been supported by… PENNYFORAPOUNDLast time he finished third at Taunton, the potentially forward-thinking eight-year-old can continue on an upward curve this afternoon, achieving his first chase success in the 15:15 at Wincanton. He was beaten by Velasco in that Taunton event, and the pair are closing the horns again today, but Pennyforapound will receive 4 pounds, so hopefully he can turn that form into a trappy gambling heat. The small step up in the journey should be another positive for Curtis’ offense, who could win the 3:15pm event.
