Former India opener Virender Sehwag will miss the first games of Legends League Cricket for ‘personal reasons’ and Mohammed Kaif will lead the Indian Maharajas in the inaugural edition of the T20 tournament, which starts on Thursday (January 20) in Muscat. Indian Maharajas will take on the Misbah-ul-Haq-led Asian Lions in the three-team tournament that concludes on January 29.

The third team at the meet is World Giants, which will be led by former West Indian captain Darren Sammy. “Sehwag has some personal problems and was therefore unable to come for the opening game. He can join later, I will lead the Indian side in the first two games,” Kaif said on the eve of the tournament.

“I have played as captain in many matches, including at national level. I have also been a coach, mentor and now commentary in my involvement in the game for many years. So it will be a lot of fun. I am looking forward to it,” added he to it.

Each team will play against each other twice and the two top teams will face each other in the top game on January 29. Kaif has Yuvraj Singh, Harbhajan Singh, Irfan Pathan, Yusuf Pathan, Subramaiam Badrinath, RP Singh, Pragyan Ojha, Naman Ojha, Manpreet Gony, Hemang Badani, Venugopal Rao, Munaf Patel, Sanjay Bangar, Nayan Mongia and Amit Bhandari as his teammates.

When asked if they would have the same intensity when facing the Pakistani players, he said: “No one wants to lose, as an athlete everyone wants to give the best of themselves.”

Shoaib Akhtar can still drive 140 km/h: Misbah-ul-Haq

Misbah will feature a star-studded Asian Lions team that includes Shoaib Akhtar, Shahid Afridi, Sanath Jayasuriya, Chaminda Vaas, Muttiah Muralitharan. “It all depends on our condition on the pitch and how they react to the situation. Shpaib can still bowl at 140 km/h. He arrived today and we’ll see how it goes.”

Speaking of their arch-rival India in the opening day’s opening match, Misbah said: “Every time we play against India, everyone gives their best on the pitch. We will be very competitive on the pitch and like to entertain people.”
