St. Louis, Mo. – The baseball team of Washington University in St. Louis is ranked ninth in the 2022 D3baseball.com/NCBWA Preseason Top 25 Poll announced by the organization.

The Bears received a total of 334 points in the preseason poll, including one vote for first place.

This is the third consecutive season that WashU has been selected as a top-10 team in the nation in the preseason poll.

Salisbury takes first place after winning the 2021 NCAA DIII National Championship with Cortland, Marietta, Johns Hopkins and Adrian rounding out the top five.

WU is the only University Athletic Association (UAA) school to appear in the national poll.

WashU is coming off its best-ever season in program history in 2021, when the Bears made their first school history trip to the DIII World Series, winning their first regional championship and setting the best-ever record in school history (34-6).

In addition to its historic success on the field, WashU held the No. 1 position in DIII for six weeks all season.

Head Coach Pat Bloom begins his seventh season with WashU with a record of 158-58, taking the Bears to four NCAA tournaments and three UAA championships.

Last year, Bloom was the D3baseball.com Central Region Coach of the Year and ABCA/ATEC Central Region Coach of the Year.

Earlier this week, senior second baseman Tim Van Kirk was selected to the D3baseball preseason All-America Team.

Van Kirk, an honorable mention D3baseball All-American roster in 2021, led WashU with a .397 batting average along with a team-high 69 hits and six triples.

The Bears also return Bo Anderson and Clayton Miller, who batted more than .300 each in more than 100 at bats last season.

Anderson was third on the team in hits (46) and doubles (8) and second in homeruns (5). Miller scored 37 hits, 10 doubles and 22 RBI in 2021.

On the mound, Miller recorded a 0.66 ERA in 13.2 innings of work with 11 strikeouts.

Additionally, junior Kyle Coates and seniors Matt Lopes and Austin Sachen will give depth to the Bears’ pitching rotation, who finished last season with the #3 ranked team earned run average (ERA) in DIII at 2.31.

Coates recorded a 2.42 ERA in 16 appearances and 26 innings pitched, while Sachen struckout 34 batters in eight appearances.

Lopes, who has a 2.14 ERA career, recovered from an injury last season, but pitched well in his lone appearance on the mound during the World Series against Adrian.

In 2019, the resident of Jupiter, Fla. a 2.19 ERA in 24.2 innings pitched, striking out 30 batters en route to a perfect 3-0 record with four saves in 14 appearances.

Additionally, this season, WashU will match six teams ranked in the D3baseball preseason national poll.

The first top 25 poll of the 2022 season will be posted on March 1.
