The new Mach 1 takes on not one, but two Porsche sports cars in a race.
Mat Watson and YouTube channel CarWow are quite known for their epic drag races. For one of their latest drag racing videos on YouTube, Watson has teamed up the Porsche Cayman GT4 and the Porsche 718 Cayman to power up the new Ford Mustang Mach1.
The three cars compared
Let’s look at the cars. Watson is in the Cayman GT4, which has a 4.0-liter naturally aspirated six-cylinder engine. It has 420 horsepower and drives the rear wheels with a six-speed manual transmission. The entry-level 718 has a 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine that produces 300 horsepower and has a seven-speed automatic transmission. Unlike the GT4, it has no launch control. However, the Mach 1 has a mighty 5.0-litre V8 engine that produces 460 horsepower, power is controlled by a manual gearbox and its rear-wheel drive. With all that out of the way, the cars took off for drag race one, and it’s pretty fascinating. The two Porsches are super close, the GT4 supplanting the entry-level Cayman, with the Mustang pretty far behind.
The Drag Racing continues
However, Watson stepped on the clutch a bit in the GT4, allowing the 718 to get that close. So for race two he didn’t. Despite a better start, the 718 Cayman, with no launch control, speeds away and just wins the race, with the Mustang still last but definitely a bit closer to the Porsches. The run time of 12.7 seconds for the 718 Cayman was quite impressive. So, how would these continue in a rolling race?
Rolling Race offers a slightly different result
Then the three cars in front of it go into a rolling race from 30 mph and into second gear. This time around, however, the GT4 Cayman gets away with better, while the Mustang keeps up with the 718 Cayman, and the end result for all three is pretty close. The next rolling race is from 80 km/h and in third gear. And this time it’s the regular Cayman taking off before the Mustang and GT4 rush past, but the American muscle car is still quite a ways behind the GT4. Finally, Watson brings the cars in for a brake test from 100 mph. The two Porsches were incredibly close, the normal Cayman just beat the GT4. Perhaps unsurprisingly, the Mustang did lose. What can we conclude here? That the 718 Cayman is a very impressive sports car!
