STILL WATER, OKLA. – The Oklahoma State women’s tennis team defeated No. 23 Princeton on Wednesday to claim the season opener by a margin of 5-2 at the Greenwood Tennis Center.
The All-American duo of Lisa Marie Rioux and Ayumi Miyamoto set the tone for the first game in the duo’s return, dominating Princeton’s Brianna Shvets and Nathalie Rodillosso, 6-2. Oona Orpana and Dariya Detkovskaya took the double point for the Cowgirls by taking down Leena Bennetto and Maia Sung 6-3.
on court one, Martina Zerulo and Mhai Sawangkaew led the seventh-ranked duo in the nation before the game was called 3-3. No. 86 Mhai Sawangkaew countered an early point from Tigers in singles by beating No. 60 Brianna Shvets, 6-4, 3-6, 6-2, to give the Cowgirls a lead. Princeton equalized when Lisa Marie Rioux fell to fourth-ranked Daria Frayman, 6-3, 7-5.
All knotted at 2 each, Ayumi Miyamoto grabbed a Cowgirl point after she caught fire and never looked back. Miyamoto left a hard-fought first set, then went on to play 10 consecutive games en route to a 4-6, 6-0, 6-4 win.
Martina Zerulo took the winning run when she defeated Neha Velaga 4-6, 6-1, 6-4. Like Miyamoto, Zerulo rolled after dropping set one. freshman Sophia Rojas finished her first double as a Cowgirl with a great time, 6-4, 4-6, 5-4, victory over Maia Sung.
The Cowgirls return to action at the Greenwood Tennis Center against South Carolina on Sunday at noon.
