Volleyball for men travels to the east coast for a few games

FORT WAYNE, Ind. – The Purdue Fort Wayne men’s volleyball team will compete in a few road games this weekend.

The Mastodons (2-2) travel to Brooklyn, NY to take on St. Francis Brooklyn on Saturday, January 22 (3pm). After Saturday’s game, the ‘Dons travel to Newark, NJ to face NJIT on Sunday, January 23 (1:00 PM).

Know Your Enemy: St. Francis Brooklyn
Saturday will be the first time the ‘Dons face St. Francis Brooklyn. Saturday is also the first game of the season for the Terriers. In 2021, the Terriers went 3-3 overall. Their only home win of the 2021 season was against Sacred Heart in March. 30.

The top striker returning to the Terriers is David Vorfi. Offensively, he led the Terriers in total kills (55), was second in kills per set (2.62) and hit .190. Defensively, Vorfi came in second in blocks (6.0) and collected 26 digs.

Know your enemy: NJIT
The ‘Dons and Highlanders met 17 times ahead of Sunday’s game. While the Dons hold a 15-2 lead over NJIT, the Highlanders won the final game on January 23, 2020, 3-0, exactly two years before Sunday’s game.

NJIT is kicking off this season with a 0-2 start after being ranked No. 15 in the preseason AVCA poll. Losing to Midwestern Intercollegiate Volleyball Association foes Lewis and Loyola Chicago in four sets.

Julian Meissner leads the Highlanders in total kills (25), kills per set (3.12), total digs (11), and digs per set (1.38). He also hits .190 for the season.

Individually, the “Dons” rank in the top 10 in several categories in the NCAA.
