WESTPUNT – A three-game set on NCAA runner-up Vanderbilt highlights a 51-game baseball for 2022. The Commodores won the first game of the 2021 College World Series Finals, but dropped the next two to champion Mississippi state .
The season kicks off February 18-20 in Charleston, South Carolina, as part of the Swig and Swing College Classic featuring the Army versus Richmond, Air Force and Ball State. The three-game series featuring Vanderbilt will be February 25-27.
A visit to Fayetteville, North Carolina, from March 4-6 will feature games with Pittsburgh, NCAA entrant Campbell and Ohio State. The military heads to Lone Star State with two games in Texas Arlington (8-9) and three games with the NCAA tournament team Texas Christian (March 11-13). The end of the 17-game road start comes on March 18-20 with three games in Elon.
“We are very excited about the schedule we have been able to put together for the 2022 season,” said Army Head Coach Jim Foster. “Our goal is to compete against the best teams in the country year after year and this season it won’t be any different. We have set up a schedule that challenges our schedule and prepares us for the conference and game after the season.”
The first of 18 home games at Doubleday Field will be against Siena on March 23. Hofstra (March 30), Fordham (April 19), Marist (April 26), Columbia (April 27), Long Island (May 3) and Manhattan (May 4) will also visit West Point. Leger was home 12-8 in 2021.
Last season, Army (28-25) captured the North Division of the Patriot League. The second-seeded Black Knights needed three games in the semifinals to beat number three Lafayette and three finals to beat Lehigh from first place. The Black Knights went to the Lubbock Regional and bowed as fourth seed to No. 1 Texas Tech, 6-3, and No. 2 UCLA, 13-6.
Army and Navy will play two games in Annapolis, Maryland, on March 27. No venue has yet been determined for doubleheaders for April 23 and 24, meaning there’s a good chance something in the works for them to play in a neutral field, perhaps a Major League stadium like previous games in Philadelphia, Boston and Baltimore. The Mets are on their way that weekend, leaving CitiField available. The Yankees are home.
