Regional survivors earn spots in the AHSAA state bowling tournament finals

Beauregard High School’s girls clawed back from a 2-1 deficit Friday at Spanish Fort’s Eastern Shore Lanes to beat Bayshore Christian 4-2 to claim the program’s first AHSAA South Regional Bowling title in the Class 1A/5A division.

Corner High School won the North Regional 1A/5A girls’ championship Friday with a 4-2 win over East Limestone in the finals at Tuscaloosa’s Shindig Family Entertainment Center bowling complex.

Baldwin County’s boys and Stanhope Elmore’s girls won the South Region Class 6A/7A division while Vestavia Hills’ boys and Sparkman’s girls took the North Region 6A/7A crowns.

The seventh AHSAA State Bowling Championship is next week at Alley Bowling Center in Gadsden. Eight boys’ and eight girls’ bowling squads advanced to the South and North Regional competition in Class 1A/5A and Class 6/7A with the top four finishers at each site in each division moving on the state championships Jan. 27-28.

Corner outscored East Limestone 808-761 in total pins. Corner also beat Etowah 4-0 and East Limestone defeated American Christian 4-3 in the semifinals. ACA actually totaled four more pins than the Pirates, 988-984, but lost four of the seven matches. All four teams advance the state tourney.

Elberta’s boys’ team beat John Carroll 4-1 in the semifinals and Satsuma 4-1 in the finals to take the South Regional crown. Satsuma defeated Marbury 4-3 in the semis and all four teams advance to the state finals in Gadsden.

Vestavia Hills claimed the North boys’ crown beating Hewitt-Trussville in the semifinals 4-2 and then topping Spain Park 4-3 – edging the Jaguars by just 14 pins overall in the Baker match that went all seven games. The Rebels had 1,409 total pins to Spain Park’s 1,395. Vestavia also beat Hewitt-Trussville 4-2 in the semifinals, and Spain Park beat defending Class 6A/7A state champion Sparkman 4-0.

Sparkman’s girls, also defending state champs, beat Vestavia Hills 4-1 in the North girls’ region finals in convincing fashion. The Senators had 926 pins to the Rebels’ 686. Sparkman beat Spain Park 4-0 and Vestavia squeezed out a 4-3 victory over Southside-Gadsden in the semifinals. All four advance.

Baldwin County won its first boys’ region title in Class 6A/7A with a 4-1 win over Thompson in the finals. Baldwin County won the semifinal match 4-2 over Hoover, but managed to knock down just one more pin in the series than the Bucs – winning 1,158 to 1,157. Thompson beat top seed Spanish Fort 4-0 in the other semifinal match. All four teams advance to the state championships.

In the South girls’ finals, Stanhope Elmore beat Thompson 4-1 with an 864 pin total. The Mustangs beat Gulf Shores 4-0 in the semis and Thompson defeated Baker 4-1. All four teams move on the state tourney next week.
