After beating Florida’s No. 1 josh goodger (7-6, 6-4) at No. 6 singles on Friday, January 14, setting a 6-0 overall record for the week and capturing TCU’s first-ever home win over a No. 1 ranked opponent, sophomore Jake fearnley has been named Big 12 Player of the Week.
Fearnley won all six of his matches last week and won three doubles matches on the top TCU pair (along with Luc Method) in addition to two wins at number 6 singles and one win at number 5 singles.
Like with Max Duggan, Fearnley has the heart to win despite an injury that left him missing most of the fall season. He rode to a 6-0 doubles win with Fomba before winning his singles at number 5, 6-0, 6-1, the most dominant singles match of his career. He won 12 games and lost only one.
On Friday night, Fearnley started the game against number 1 Florida with number 1 doubles, again with Fomba and number 6 singles. In doubles, Fearnley and Fomba triumphed over Florida’s best combination of sam office and ben Shelton, 6-4, take the double point, which would be the difference in the game.
With just four lanes left in the singles game, TCU led 3-1 when Edinburgh resident No. 111 defeated Josh Goodger in straight sets (7-6, 6-4) to secure the Horned Frogs’ victory . For the first time in his career, Fearnley won a singles match against a ranked opponent.
He performed similarly against No. 4 Tennessee last Sunday, winning his No. 1 doubles, 6-3, over defending National Doubles champions pat Harper and Adam Walton. Using that win, TCU took the double point for the third time that week. TCU was out, 2-3, when Fearnley came to court to play a prodigious match, beating number 123 Conor Gannon (4-6, 7-5, 6-2) to level TCU with Tennessee, at 3-3. Though Tennessee would eventually prevail, Fearnley took his second straight win in singles, going into the week with none, and cementing his place in the No. 5 TCU squad.
The Horned Frogs and Fearnley will host Abilene Christian University at Bayard H Friedman Tennis Center on January 27 at 2 p.m. The competition will be public. Free pizza is provided, compliments of Buffalo Bros.
