2 horses attract a lot of money

A lot of steam was expected to be generated by smile happily in Pool 2 of the Kentucky Derby Future Wager. Jim “Mattress Mack” McIngvale, the famous sports gambler who owns the foal’s father, Runhappy, promised.

What was less predictable was the money coming in on Saturday from his Kenny McPeek stable mate
Tiz the bomb.

Of the 24 betting picks in the pari-mutuel win pool, Smile Happy and Tiz the Bomb collectively accounted for 15 percent of the cash bet on the second day of the KDFW, which closes at 6 p.m. EST on Sunday.

Smile Happy, the winner of the Kentucky Jockey Club Stakes (G2), who nearly single-handedly made the best individual bet pick in November’s Pool 1 by McIngvale, went from 7-1 to 6-1 by the end of the business Saturday night. He pulled $12,617 of the $168,745 that went into the winning pool on Day 2.

Tiz the Bomb, who finished runner-up to Modern Games in the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Turf, was reduced from 20-1 to 7-1 after raking in $13,042 in Saturday’s betting. Gamblers are betting that during the Holy Bull (G3) at Gulfstream Park on Feb. 5, McPeek will successfully return him to the dirt, the surface on which he broke his girl at Ellis Park on July 2.

The head-to-head, made up of “all 3-year-olds” other than the 23 selected for individual bets, went from even money to 2-1, bringing in $18,462 on Saturday. It would be horses like Las Vegas gambling favorite Corniche, who is trained by banned Hall of Famer Bob Baffert.

The two-day profit grab totaled $168,745.

In the exact market, Smile Happy over “everyone else” replaced the same combination in reverse as the favorite, with a potential return of $75.80. Saturday’s exacta handle was $23,947, making the two-day total $39,162.

This weekend’s KDFW pool is the second of five scheduled for the 2021-22 road to the Derby. The next three are February 11-13, March 11-13, and March 31-April 2.

The Thursday-Saturday dates of the final pool this spring are not an error. Churchill Downs spokesman Darren Rogers explained: “We have decided not to close pool 5 at the traditional 6pm (Sunday) but before April 2 preparations that day, probably somewhere between the 4-5pm window or whenever the first preparation is run that day it makes it more of a real future bet.”
