Check out Chok’s Choices for Saturday’s Fair Grounds races | horse racing

Choices made today for Fast Track and ON Turf

Race 1

7. Aphrodites Revenge: Probably prefers the two turns, so the latter is good preparation for this.

5. Creole Baby: Impressed with this first run; every improvement is won.

Race 2

1. Henning: Was scratched off the turf from a race earlier this week; fits here.

2. War Tribute: Could get a job to his liking with the rails down and inside the post.

Race 3

4. Tripper Jan: From layoff and in the Shirer shed; has early zip to get the lead.

6. Cyprian: Whoever has to beat here after a close second on this level has last.

Race 4

7. Pulled To Race: Layoff since Saratoga summer starts; seems to be class of this area.

2. The Girl Is On Fire: Another fired, but won this course in wire work last February.

Race 5

5. At your place: Hard hitter likes this song; shed is also starting to heat up.

3. Prime Factor: Not seen since May but was a very good 3 year old sprinter.

Race 6

7. Summer Tsunami: The latter was a better-than-looked attempt; two turf attempts were solid.

2. I am awake: One of the interesting beginners here; grabs hot-riding Rey Guitierrez.

Race 7

4. Ratification: A little sneaky fast in the morning, working on his first start.

3. Shanghai Trick: Not sneakily fast, just fast in the mornings for trainer Amoss; finished.

Race 8

5. Smart Skipper: Has the rearguard made an effort to deal with this and is getting a new stable today as a plus.

1. Balook: Long shot play has three turf wins in nine starts and gets the rail draw today.

Race 9

8. Strong Quality: Scratched out of the heat for this on Saturday; can be overlooked when betting.

4. Brion: Bred to win early and go fast early; did a quick job in the morning from the gate.

Around the track

There are some really good maiden races today. Maiden races involve horses that have never won a race, so they are matched together in races with other horses that have never won to make an even and fair race. These races often include horses that have also never run before, despite training. My references to “starters for the first time” are intended to alert everyone that this horse is entering a race for the first time. We use pedigree (ie who the horse’s mother and father are – called the mother and father – along with training times to determine a horse’s talent), but at the end of the day those races are the hardest because there are plenty of unknowns.

Best guess

Our best bet today is in race #2: Henning. Hoping it stays on the turf and is well spotted for a win.

Good luck and may they all come home safe.
