Gary Russell Jr.: If Caleb Plant was in 15-round boxing form, he would have beaten Canelo

In 2021, there were many ecstatic boxing fights that stunned the fighting brotherhood. On that lavish list, the undisputed super-middleweight war between Canelo Alvarez and Caleb Plant takes a very different place. This fight was one of the most entertaining confrontations of all time, and no one could have expected anything better in a fight of this magnitude.

The favourite, Canelo, won the fight flawlessly by securing a T/KO victory. However, Plant kept the p4p king on his toes. Gary Russell Jr. also believes that Plant would have won the fight if he was in 15-round boxing form.

Speaking to Brian Custer, he said: “To be honest, I like Caleb too. I like Caleb Plant. I told people that if he was in boxing form in 15 rounds, it was really possible he could have beaten Canelo. If he wasn’t by the eighth round, Canelo will indulge like Jason, and that’s what happened.

‘Sweethands’ had an advantage with his height. That said, he distanced himself well from the Mexican boxer. But Canelo Alvarez, being himself, quickly switched and started targeting Plant’s body. The p4p king marched forward with his powerful blows, pressuring his opponent relentlessly.

On the other hand, ‘Sweethands’ kept his jabs at the game and used the entire ring space. However, it was on lap 11, when Canelo hit him with a powerful blow to the chin. Taking advantage of that, Alvarez dropped Plant twice in that round to eventually turn the tables in his favor.
