This is going to be hard work. 15 runners will jump when the tires are lifted, but nearly four miles, 21 fences and hard work will separate the wheat from the chaff and there will almost certainly be no more double digits when they’re done.

There were six finishers in 2017, six in 2018 and six in 2019, and look at the times. They were 30.10 seconds slower than standard five years ago, 53.2 seconds slower a year later, and the last time this was run, in 2019, they were 47.8 seconds slower.

You get the picture. We are probably looking for a horse that can swim instead of run as this race will be run under the most testing conditions of all. It comes as the penultimate race in the Winter Million weekend and the ground will be churned up after so much racing.

So which horses can swim? It seems clear that most trainers who signed up for runners chose this race simply because their horses love to test and we can see that from Racing Post Ratings as there are several whose highest RPRs on have come into tough territory.

Laskalin got his three highest RPRs in France in heavy riding and he rattled second more than three miles higher than Exeter’s stiff finish last time. This test will be ideal and Venetia Williams trained fighters on heavy in the month of January are showing a profit of £3.45 since 2016.

Richard Rowe is the other trainer to mention. He has had more winners on jumps at Lingfield than at any other circuit in Britain in the last five seasons and a £1 bet on each would have resulted in a £24 profit. He leads Colonel Keating, who won tough here last month.

Fado Des Brosses, Eclair Mag and Little Red Lion are the favorites of the other mudlarks in the lineup.

Go Whatever and Pemberley are getting ready for another national duel

And you thought Boris Johnson had a rough start to the year. Not even the beleaguered Prime Minister has been asked to tackle two Nationals in three weeks.

That’s the job for progressive pursuers Go Whatever and Pemberley, who completed three and a half circuits of Plumpton in the Sussex National on the first Sunday of the month.

The success of Go Whatever at seven lengths earned him a 7lb jump in the BHA ratings and the chance to do it all again in the Surrey National during the same grueling journey of approximately 3m4½f in equally endurance-destroying ground .

He retains the visor, which clearly worked so well at Plumpton, and trainer Chris Gordon said: “In an ideal world I would have loved to have had an extra week or two after a tough race over five and a half miles last time, but it’s a nice race for him.

“The visor worked well and I see no reason why it wouldn’t work anymore. He came out of the race great and I hope he will have a good crack.”

Runner-up Pemberley is taking him on again and trainer Emma Lavelle said: “He ran really well at Plumpton on his first try on the trip and he seems to have come out when it’s extremely good.

“He’s very simple, he canters and he jumps, and fingers crossed he’ll be there at the business end.”

what they say

Ben Clarke, trainer of The Galloping Bear
He is very naked and his pedigree and everything he has done suggests that he will be suitable for this test. He was going to run in the Welsh National, but he returned with a somewhat dirty scope. Since then he has been training with this weekend in mind and we are looking forward to it.

Alex Hales, Smooth Stepper trainer
This is the lowest race he’s been in for a while and I think he’s getting back into shape. I was delighted to have him at Cheltenham on New Years Day and five and a half miles around Lingfield should be perfect for him.

Richard Bandey, trainer of Eclair Mag
He needs to revive his form from last year and this season has been frustrating but the ground seems to be in his favor and this is a nice pot to go for.
