Senior striker Kyle Daggett made two free throws with two seconds left to lift Shepherd over Kutztown 65-63 in overtime in a Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference East game at Keystone Arena on Saturday.
Daggett finished with a career-high 28 points and 11 rebounds for the Rams (2-6, 6-8), breaking the Golden Bears’ two-game win streak.
KU (3-7, 6-10) won in their previous two games against Bloomsburg and West Chester by hitting a winning shot after the lapse of time.
The Golden Bears trailed 33-26 at halftime, 11 early in the second half and 8 at 59-51 with 5:08 to go before coming back.
Kutztown tied the score on a pair of free throws from Michael Smith III with 33 seconds left in the rules. Sheepdog Jon Preston missed a three-pointer with seven seconds left. Smith missed a layup at the buzzer.
In overtime, Kutztown went 63-61 on a dunk by Akeem Taylor Jr. with 2:56 left, but didn’t score again. The Golden Bears were 1-for-9 from the field and 0-for-1 from the line in overtime.
Shepherd, who shot 1-for-6 from the field in OT, tied it on a jumper from Daggett with 54 seconds left.
Kyree Generett missed nine seconds later for Kutztown. Shepherd then missed two shots, but each got the offensive rebound, Daggett’s second, who then landed on a foul and scored the winning free throws.
Freshman Jalen Bryant missed a 3 at the buzzer for Kutztown.
Bryant had a team-high 19 points and Smith 11 for the Golden Bears.
For Shepherd, freshman guard Jarod Robinson scored 12 points, while senior guard Cam Stephens contributed eight points.
Alvernia 76, York College 69: At York, Malik Green scored a team-high 27 points to lead the Golden Wolves (5-4, 10-5) over the Spartans (2-7, 6-8) in a MAC Commonwealth- contest .
Jacob Stroud jumper gave the Golden Wolves a seven point lead at 27-20 midway through the first half.
Shortly afterwards, York reacted with a 21-9 run to take a 41-36 halftime break.
Green had 11 points in the second half as Alvernia defeated York 40-28.
Keon Taylor and Avery Walker each scored 10 in the second half of the Golden Wolves comeback.
David Giuliani led York by 14 points.
Kutztown 63, Shepherd 47: At Keystone Arena, Rylee Derr scored 18 points and led the No. 24 Golden Bears (9-2, 16-4) over the Rams (12-3, 6-3) in the PSAC East.
Kutztown and Shepherd came into play as the top two teams in the division.
Shepherd made 4-for-5 3-pointers to take an 18-17 after the first quarter. Kutztown responded by beating Shepherd 22-10 in the second quarter to take a 39-28 halftime break.
The Golden Bears had a 15-2 run in the third quarter and a 9-2 run in the fourth to eliminate it.
Sydney Clayton led Shepherd by 12 points.
Alvernia 53, York College 62: At York, Bradi Zumbrum scored a career-high 21 points as the Spartans (8-1, 14-3) completed the Golden Wolves’ season sweep (2-7, 8-8) in a MAC Commonwealth game.
Jordan Karmonick led the Golden Wolves by 14 points.
Kayla Ferris had 10 points and 12 rebounds for York.
The Spartans improve to 11-6 all-time against Alvernia, while York extends his winning streak to six in a row against the Golden Wolves.
