Benedict Cumberbatch ‘loved’ New Zealand lockdown with his family

Sherlock actor Benedict Cumberbatch has been gushing about his luxury lockdown experience in the Hawke’s Bay.

The 45-year-old was halfway through the filming of Golden Globe Best Drama The power of the dog directed by acclaimed New Zealand director Dame Jane Campion, when lockdown restrictions were first imposed in March 2020.

“I loved [lockdown],” he told The daily email.

Rather than try to leave the country within 24 hours and go to the UK, he and his wife Sophie Hunter decided to stay where he was.

“It was also in consideration of how best to complete the film for Jane Campion that he stayed in accommodation that helped find and finance the production,” the Cumberbatch representative confirmed.

But their isolation accommodation was not an MIQ hotel room.

The actor, Hunter, and their two boys – Kit, 5 and Hal, 3 – stayed at Summerlee Luxury Retreat in Black Barn Vineyards, in the small town of Te Awanga. The Hawke’s Bay ocean view lodge rents out for over $3000 a night and has over half a dozen of the best local wineries on your doorstep.

Cumberbatch said the family “found a new home” in the idyllic property, which features eight bedrooms, an open-plan living and dining area, professional kitchen, utility room, additional kitchenette “for cooking staff”, study, TV room and loggia that is so are placed that the most of the midday sun.

They had 10 acres of gardens to call their own, complete with swimming and spa pools, a pool house equipped with fitness equipment, tennis and petanque courts, a croquet area, an orchard and a vegetable garden.

In preparation for his appearance in the Netflix western as the sadistic and oppressed rancher Phil Burbank, Cumberbatch gave himself three times nicotine poisoning through method acting.

Shooting for the film began in January 2020 in Otago, where Cumberbatch’s co-stars Kirsten Dunst and Jesse Plemons were spotted having dinner in early March.

But Cumberbatch moved to the Summerlee property during the lockdown, which is set up at the end of a long oak-lined driveway.

As restrictions eased, it wasn’t long before the locals of Hawke’s Bay started taking notice.

He was spotted below level 2 and visited at least one local winery. MailOnline quoted a woman in the Hawke’s Bay as saying, “Sometimes I forget I work at a spark plug winery, but today I was driving my tractor past the winery restaurant and saw Benedict Cumberbatch sitting there.”

And although the actor’s parents only planned a three-week stay: “They stayed for five months!” he said.

“We were so lucky. Far from home, but we found a new one.”
