Longhouse Poet: Reportedly On Course For A Thursday Crack Goffs Thyestes Chase

Thyeste’s dive horse Longhouse Poet is on track for a crack at the €100,000 contest according to trainer Martin Brassil, who hopes the ground will continue to test at Gowran Park for his mud-loving eight-year-old.

Longhouse Poet had a 25-1 shot with Paddy Power last week but is now the all-time favorite at just 5-1 with the same company for the Goffs sponsored showpiece on Thursday.

The fighter had strong starting form last season, beating National Hunt Chase favorite Run Wild Fred, now a 158 rating, in a novice chase at Punchestown, and chasing subsequent Grade 1 winner Janidil at Naas.

Brassil, who won the Thyestes in 2005 with Grand National hero Numbersixvalverde, thinks Longhouse Poet will improve on his return to Limerick in December and would like the ground for his charges to remain on the test.

The course of events was described as soft on Monday by course leader Paddy Graffin.

Brassil said: “The plan is to run on Thursday and I just hope the ground doesn’t dry out too much for him, although Gowran seems to be one of those tracks that keeps his fluids up well. He seems to be very good in himself and I think he will be fine to run to limerick he just got tired that day.

“He’s a horse I’ve always thought about a lot and chases like this should be something you should have in mind for a horse like him. His win at the beginner’s hunt at Punchestown went well, but he will be in a breed like the Thyestes.”

There will be a great supporting card at Gowran Park’s Thursday game, where double Cheltenham Gold Cup hero Al Boum Photo could face stable mate Klassical Dream in the Grade 2 John Mulhern Galmoy Hurdle (2.05).

Paddy Power made that match more expensive to make Klassical Dream their 6-4 favourite, with Al Boum Photo available at 7-4. Leading Mares’ Hurdle contender Royal Kahala is next best at 5-2.

Gowran Park manager Eddie Scally is predicting one of the most popular Thyestes days yet after the Irish government lifts restrictions on indoor and outdoor gatherings, allowing a potential crowd of 10,000 to attend one of the great midweek gatherings of the year.

Scally said: “It’s going to be the biggest and best Thyestes day yet and I can’t wait. I cannot emphasize enough how much I missed a full house and that carnival atmosphere.

“Thursday’s limited capacity tickets were almost sold out. That was for 4,500 people. Now we can plan well and give everyone an unforgettable day – we can now have anywhere from 8,000 to 10,500 people. Closed doors just weren’t the same. “It’s not what I signed up for. It’s for days like next Thursday and a packed Gowran Park that I love this job.”
