Women’s tennis drops season opener to Saint Francis-Pa., 5-2

BALTIMORE, Md. (January 24, 2022) – The Morgan State women’s tennis team opened the 2022 season with a 5-2 non-conference loss to a visit to Saint Francis-Pa. on Sunday afternoon.

The Red Flash improved to 1-1 on the season, while the Lady Bears fell to 0-1. It marked the first time Morgan State played a women’s tennis game since taking a 6-1 win over Loyola Maryland on March 11, 2020.

Asmara Rose dropped her number 1 singles match against Dominique Yeo of Saint Francis-Pa. 6-4, 0-6, 4-10. Averiana Mitchell was defeated by Anouk Ma-Ajong in the number 2 spot 7-6 (5-0), 7-5. The Red Flash also had victories by Bente Vandeputte at number 3 and Romina Cutipa at number 4.

Morgan State’s wins came from Hannah Smith, who beat Valeria Vinces 6-1, 4-2 at No. 5 singles and Stefania Moysiada, who took a win 6-4, 4-6, 10-4 at No. 6 at No. Nagisa Miyake .

The Red Flash claimed the double point with victories over number 2 against Vandeputte and Anoek Pruijmboom 6-4 over Morgan State’s Hannah Smith and Ana-Lei Kalaweas well as at number 3 doubles with beating Romina Cutipa and Marie Discini Anabel Torrent and Stefania Moysiada 6-0.

Morgan State’s No. 1 Doubles Team of Asmara Rose and Averiana Mitchell defeated Dominique Yeo and Anouk Ma-Ajong 6-3.

“We lost a tough game. We fought and controlled most games, but didn’t finish the finish,” said Morgan State head coach. Matthew Townes. “It’s the first game of the year, so I expect we’ll get that killer instinct soon.”

The next step for the Lady Bears is a no-conference game in Washington, DC against George Washington. The first service is scheduled at 1 p.m
