This weekend could be the last chance to enjoy the snow for a while in Center County before temperatures rise in February.

“We could see conditions across Pennsylvania feel more like early spring with temperatures getting into the at least mid 40s and even upper 40s,” Joseph Bauer, a meteorologist at Accuweather, said.

Center County has had 12.6 inches of snow this January, slightly more than normal, and could get up to an inch more on Friday, Bauer said.

Here are a few ideas if you’re looking to have fun in the snow while it lasts.

Sledding at Slab Cabin Park

Although other park hills are available for sledding, none are as big as the hill at Slab Cabin Park. Located at 316 Elmwood St., the park is part of Center Region Parks & Recreation. Night sledding is also an option, depending on conditions. Updates on the hill can be found at the department’s website.

Ice Skating

There are several public ice skating rinks around Center County, the newest being in Bellefonte’s Talleyrand Park. Blue Springs Park in Harris Township and Howard Community Park in Howard Borough also have rinks this year.

People should bring their own skates and follow any rules posted.

Tussey Mountain

For those looking for an adrenaline rush, Tussey Mountain is open for skiing, snowboarding and tubing. Hours are noon-9 pm on weekdays and 9 am to 5 pm on weekends. Reservations are required for tubing and can be made online.

Fun in the Snow at Black Mo

Black Moshannon State Park is hosting several winter activities from 10 am to 2 pm on Saturday, including ice mini golf, curling, ice bowling and others.

The event will teach a lesson on making fake snow that children can take home, as well as a snow sculpture contest.

All events will take place at the Environmental Learning Center and the Friends of Black Moshannon will have food and merchandise available for purchase at the center.

A full list of activities and times can be found on the event’s Facebook page.

Winter Hike

Center County has many local nature parks and forest preserves to hike or snowshoe in, including Rothrock State Forest and Millbrook Marsh Nature Center.

The Pennsylvania Department of Conservation and Natural Resources recommends checking weather conditions, staying on the trail and bringing a friend on any hikes.
