SIOUX FALLS, SD – Augustana acrobatics & tumbling has a national champion as a head coach. Kaelyn Cowani has been named the first-ever head coach for the Viking acrobatics & tumbling team set to take the mat for the first time in the 2022-23 school year.
“We are excited to not only start this program, but also that we found the right leader to create a championship-level experience for future acrobatics & tumbling student-athletes,” Morton said. “Coach Cowan joins a department committed to competitive excellence and she’ll come to Sioux Falls fresh off another national championship at Baylor. We can’t wait for our community to experience this emerging sport firsthand.”
Cowan joins the Augustana athletics department from Baylor University where she was an assistant coach since 2019. The Bears won the 2021 National Collegiate Acrobatics & Tumbling Association National Championship for the sixth-straight year. She also won three national championships as a student-athlete for the Bears while earning a pair of All-America accolades.
“I am honored to have the opportunity to coach the first acrobatics and tumbling team at Augustana University,” Cowan said. “I am excited to watch the sport grow in this region and continue to provide many opportunities to female student-athletes to compete at the collegiate level.
“I cannot thank the AU administration enough for being so welcoming to me. I am eager to arrive in Sioux Falls to begin working alongside incredible people to create this upcoming program!”
Prior to being an assistant at her alma mater, Cowan was the head coach at Limestone University in Gaffney, South Carolina. She led the Saints to a 6-2 record in their inaugural season in the 2018-19 academic year.
Before earning her first gig as a head coach, Cowan spent time as an assistant coach at West Virginia Wesleyan where she helped with recruiting, fundraising, the organization of clinics and was in charge of coaching the tumblers.
As a student-athlete for the Bears, Cowan led BU to back-to-back-to-back NCATA National Championships from 2015-17. She was a Baylor University Scholar-Athlete, a First Team Academic All-Big 12 honoree and was named to the Big 12 Commissioner’s Honor Roll.
