The celebration of the 73rd Republic Day passed peacefully in Jammu and Kashmir on Wednesday, amid tight security arrangements.
Strict security arrangements were put in place to prevent any untoward incident and the celebrations passed off peacefully, officials said, adding that the presence of security forces was ramped up across the union area while dozens of security barricades were erected along routes leading to key locations.
Drones were also flown around key locations in Jammu and Kashmir to monitor any suspicious movement. As part of the security exercise, internet services on mobile devices were temporarily suspended.
Mobile internet services were suspended in Kashmir on Wednesday ahead of the Republic Day celebrations, but were reinstated in the evening. A senior police officer said paging services on mobile and broadband services remained unaffected by the measure.
The main R-Day event was held at the MA Stadium in Jammu where LG Manoj Sinha unfolded the tricolor while in Kashmir advisor RR Bhatnagar presided over the main function at Sher-e-Kashmir Cricket Stadium.
Despite the cold weather, contingents of police and other security forces took part in the parade after Adv Bhatnagar was given the guard of honour.
To mark the occasion, there was a short cultural program after the parade. The Republic Day ceremonies were also held at other district headquarters and in the valleys, officials said.
Lieutenant Governor Sinha hoisted the national flag at Maulana Azad Stadium this morning. The lieutenant governor inspected the parade and took the ceremonial salute.
The Republic Day parade featured smart contingents from the Army, BSF, CRPF, SSB, IRP (Women & Male), J&K Police, JKAP, UT Disaster Response Force, J&K Fire, and Emergency Services, J&K Forest Protection Force , Excise Department, ex-Military, NCC Boys and Girls, Bharat Scouts and Guides (Girls & Boys), in addition to various school contingents, Brass & Pipe Bands of Army, BSF, J&K Police, J&K Armed Police.
The colorful Republic Day celebrations, filled with patriotic fervor and celebratory mood, were aptly reflected by a large number of impressive cultural items presented on the occasion of various schools and departments.
The J&K Police showed the breathtaking Motorcycle Acrobatics, in addition to cultural pageantry based on the various themes, activities were the main attractions of the program. Dozens of students from various schools presented a cultural spectacle based on national integration and the glorious composite heritage of the Union Territory of Jammu and Kashmir marked the day.
Earlier, the Lieutenant Governor laid a wreath at Police Martyrs Memorial & Balidan Stambh and paid tribute to the martyrs who gave their lives for the unity and integrity of our country.
“The courage of the Jawans and officers of APR, the military and other central security forces and their unparalleled courage is an inspiration to all. The nation will always remain indebted to their sacrifices. We must all make a commitment to eradicate terrorism and the terror ecosystem perpetuated by the neighboring country,” the lieutenant governor said.
Among those who witnessed the Republic Day celebrations were Chief Justice Jammu and the Supreme Court of Kashmir; Advisor to the Lt Governor; judges of the J&K High Court; Mayor, Jammu Municipal Corporation; Member of Parliament; chief secretary; DGP; elected representatives of ULBs and PRIs; former legislators; senior civilian, police and military officers; political and social activists; prominent citizens, media people and the bourgeoisie.
