The six-time champion will not play a role in the competition this year and could also miss Wimbledon.
Roger Federer will not participate in the 2022 Australian Open, which began in Melbourne earlier this week.
The Swiss superstar confirmed last month that he would not be able to participate and also expressed doubts about his ability to compete in Wimbledon in June.
Here’s what we know about Roger Federer missing the Australian Open and his chances of returning in time for the next big event.
Will Roger Federer play in 2022 Australian Open?
Roger Federer will miss the 2022 Australian Open while recovering from knee surgery.
The six-time winner and twenty-time Grand Slam champion missed the 2021 event for the same reason, but recovered in time to compete at Wimbledon.
However, the Swiss star took more time off immediately after leaving the All England Club, where he was defeated in the quarter-finals by Poland’s Hubert Hurkacz.
As he continues to recover from further surgery, the 40-year-old confirmed in December 2021 that he would miss the Australian Open for the second year in a row.
Will Roger Federer play at Wimbledon 2022?
Roger Federer has raised doubts about whether or not he will be able to compete in Wimbledon in 2022.
In an interview with Le Martin, Federer virtually shut himself out of the event as he continues his rehabilitation.
He said: “I would be very surprised if I could play Wimbledon.
“I will be able to continue running quietly in January and resume court hearings in March or April with complex support.
“I therefore estimate my return to the competition in the summer of 2022.”
“My ambition is to see one last time what I am capable of,” he said.
“I would also like to be able to say goodbye in my own way and on a tennis court. That is why I give everything in my rehabilitation.
“My life won’t collapse if I don’t play another Grand Slam final.
“But it would be the ultimate dream to go back. And I still believe in it – I believe in miracles like this.”
Australian Open 2022: Last chances men’s singles
With neither Novak Djokovic nor Roger Federer playing a part in the 2022 Australian Open, the door is wide open for Rafael Nadal to claim his second Melbourne title.
The Spaniard has also won 20 Grand Slams, but has only triumphed once in Australia and that was more than a decade ago in 2009.
His lack of success at the event means that, despite his obvious parentage, the 35-year-old is not the bookmakers’ favorite to win the event.
Also for Nadal, the German Alexander Zverev is 3/1 with the Spaniard third favorite at 4/1.
