28/1/2022 Horse Racing Tips and Best Bets – Canterbury

Night races continue in Canterbury on Friday evenings. The weather is nice, the track is good (4) and the track is six meters out for the whole circuit.

4 Robursto (Now bet: $3.80) is a Churchill foal for Chris Waller that is here first. Well bred colt that debuted during the spring in Flemington on the back straight and worked pretty well behind Get In The Spirit to the line finishing fourth. Tested well enough in my view and this is a very winable race.

Danger

10 noose (Now bet: $6.50) is a daughter of Epaulette who resumes. She debuted in the Kirkham Plate in the spring, where she was quite raw and new to the hairdressing business, just looking for the run behind stable mate Ojai. She has had two trials to prepare for her return and looked strong in readiness. Market will be a good guide.

Small chance

5 Sandpaper (Now bet: $8.50) is an interesting runner. James Cummings trained a colt that debuted after two trials. First test he was on the freight transport and he moved neatly. During the Rosehill trial he wore blinders and wanted to do a lot wrong, but the last few steps he switched in and hit the line with real purpose. I wonder how he goes.

Race 2. (18:30) Ranvet Mdn Hcp 1250m

I am with 4 California Surreal (Now bet: $2.00), which resumed for Team Snowden. This girl hasn’t raced since September 29 when a race came in third on the Kenso track after getting close to speed, getting excited in the run and getting tired late. Super tested at Rosehill, although the time was ordinary compared to the morning. But I think you have to trust what you saw.

Danger

solve 1 (Now bet: $3.30) is the main threat. He has qualified in both career outings, the latter coming in Canterbury when he was up to speed and trying hard but couldn’t stand Sneaky Shark, with a big lead in third. Last time he was a couple of weeks between runs so you would think there would be an improvement.

Small chance

3 Nickel back (Now bet: $14.00) is a great opportunity here I think. He made his proving ground debut at Gosford and I think that certainly saw his wheels turn when Tommy Berry asked for the effort. He had a SP of $2 and is double digits here so if you are an SP profile fan you will like this horse.

Race 3. (19:00) Acy Securities Mdn Hcp 1550m

I think Chris Waller will win the race. Just a matter of finding the right one. I think 1 Inuashi (Now bet: $4.60) is the gene. Debuted at the Beaumont circuit in Newcastle on Boxing Day and closed out strong from almost the latter to finish a close-up third. The time was solid and three winners have already emerged. Fitter, up to 1550m, he’s hard to beat.

Danger

6 Pretend (Now bet: $3.80) is a Zoustar filly who made his midweek debut at Warwick Farm. She looked a little raw and new to the capers when initially asked for the effort, but I liked the way she picked it up very late in the piece. Like her to 1550m and is there any indication that J Mac is riding this girl?

Small chance

4 Customization (Now bet: $7.50) will put itself up to speed and try hard. That was the case last time in a girl’s 2000m competition at Newcastle’s Beaumont track. He led and fought bravely in defeat to finish third. I think if he wants to win, he has to make a real run 1550 meters from the front.

Race 4. (19:30) The Agency Real Estate (bm72) 1550m

* The above offers may only be available to selected customers.

6 Fiordland (Now bet: $3.30) seems hard to beat here and has an advantage/progress for the Waller camp. Last time ran over 1500m at Rosehill when he was close to speed all the time and tried hard but couldn’t quite finish it when he finished third at Caesars Palace. Gets run of the race from the draw and runs just fine.

Danger

4 maccomo (Now bet: $3.70) is on the seven day backup to Joe Pride after racing here last Friday night where he tried to lead the whole time and gave a good kick but just couldn’t quite finish it when he finished third after Glamor Fox. Tricky gate on paper, but has the early speed to make it happen and run a daring race.

Small chance

1 great boy (Now bet: $10.00) looks good at this level. I found the class a little rich last time at Rosehill when he was behind O’Mudgee on the track after being near the speed. Think back to this kind of class and with more conservative controls, an improved display on the cards.

Race 5. (20:00) Xxxx (bm72) 1900m

* The above offers may only be available to selected customers.

On paper it looks like an open race, but I’m quite excited about it 6 rules do not apply (Now bet: $7.00) runs well here. I thought she was terribly beaten here last Friday night as she had no cover for the trip, tried to make a sustained flight to the leaders and only got the swayer very late. If that didn’t get her, I think she’ll run a beauty here from the gate.

Danger

1 Reinforced (Now bet: $5.00) has more benefits than most and I thought the resumption was more than encouraging. That came over the mile at Warwick Farm where he got a decent way back into the run but finished nicely behind Marnix who won again on Wednesday so form is ticked off and gets J Mac.

Small chance

9 Josephus (Now bet: $8.50) bursts out to win a race for Gwenda Markwell. I loved him last time in Nowra and he looked like the winner when he came off clear but couldn’t stand the Clear Blonde final. I think he’s doing well again. Not sure if he wins, but one for multiples.

Race 6. (20:30) Kia Shooting Star (bm72) 1250m

* The above offers may only be available to selected customers.

I have a little time for 6 Texel (Now bet: $4.60) and I think he can resume a winner for the Maher/Eustace camp. He has not raced since August 14 when he raced the mile at Goulburn. Almost defied a remarkable gambling drive, but got caught late. Tried out pretty well and should get a nice run from the gate.

Danger

4 Finally Realize (Now bet: $3.90) has the strong mold lines to take this out. He has two runs under his belt from a spell, both in Midway races, the last being two weeks ago when he was close to defeat behind Crosscheck. Back to this level, if he gets to a decent spot through the tricky draw, he will take a beating.

Small chance

2 Diamonds’n’stones (Now bet: $8.50) is a son of Brazen Beau for Team Hawkes that resumes. Hasn’t raced since September 22 when he was up to speed and very late exhausting behind Excelida who has been running Stakes ever since. No public trials in Sydney but has had two jumpouts in Melbourne so interesting placement here. Look at the market.

Race 7. (21:00) First Just Yearlings (bm72) 1100m

* The above offers may only be available to selected customers.

2 state Willie (Now bet: $2.90) seems to have quality and I think he could make a kill here before going back to Stakes rank. Won with arrogance on the Kenso track debut before getting way too enthusiastic in the Brian Crowley as he took third after Mazu. He was sharp in both stages so that’s a concern, but he has a huge advantage, class and quality to overcome that and win.

Danger

Back to 1100m I like for 4 Sky Command (Now bet: $6.00). The 1200m was a bridge too far for her fresh in the Midway at Rosehill as she tired late behind Crosscheck. To me she seems like a short gaited horse so 1100m around Canterbury should be a good set up and she gets Blinkers/J Mac the first time.

Small chance

Not a shock at all that has been speculated about early on 5 What could be? (Now bet: $31.00) and I’ll have something on him too. Was first with him on the big chance because of a dry track and the strong pace and luckily it played out like that. He’ll be getting a similar set-up here again, so he’ll be right in the middle of the mix.

13 Twice as special (Now bet: $12.00) is not a reliable mare in terms of winning, but I do think she jumps well. Well late at Warwick Farm two behind Broken Arrows before going to Rosehill in a Midway where she was tried late but had no luck in the straight behind Crosscheck. Gets a bad flight from the gate and if the breaks go her way I think she could be dangerous.

Danger

3 Accelerated (Now bet: $5.50) has been pretty good in two runs back from a break and should be just about ready to get fit again. Both runs came in here, the last one being well late last Friday evening without any threat behind Bugalugs. Up to 1250m now he will be able to take a beating.

Small chance

like the old one 1 Mountains (Now bet: $13.00) showed up here, he would give them a beating. Just hasn’t shown it in a while but he does like Canterbury this distance and is a dry track horse so ticks a few boxes. Tricky draw to win but he does look sharp in a recent test win so curious to see how he fares.
