Barcenilla, Lorenzo push Laguna past Manila in PCAP chess tilt

MANILA—Grandmaster Rogelio “Banjo” Barcenilla Jr. and Kimuel Aaron Lorenzo drove the Laguna Heroes to an 11.5-9.5 win over an NM Jerry Areque-led Manila Indios Bravos of the 2nd season of the Professional Chess Association of the Philippines online chess tournament held virtually on Chess.com Platform Wednesday night January 26, 2022.
A multiple champion of the Battle of the GMs, Barcenilla defeated Areque in 55 moves of an English opening in the blitz section, then split with National Master Rolando Andador in 70 moves of Caro-Kann defense in the quick encounter in board 1 while Lorenzo defeated Jhulo Goloran in their blitz (45 moves from Four Knights Games) and quick (56 moves French defense) showdown on board 6 to help the Heroes to a share of first place with Pasig and San Juan tied 2-0 victories. loss records in the Northern Conference.
“Manila is a strong team. We were just lucky to beat them tonight. It was indeed an exciting game,” said Arena Grandmaster Dr. Fred Paez, one of the four co-team owners of the Laguna Heroes, including Mr. David Nithyananthan. from KALARO, Engr. Concio tied with Woman National Master Mira Mirano, Bagamasbad won by forfeiture of Dr. Jenny Mayor and Jocson overthrew master candidate Genghis Imperial.
Andador and international master Chito Garma fought the good battle for Manila’s wood pushers.
Andador defeated Fide Master Austin Jacob Literatus in board 2 while Garma defeated Vince Angelo Medina in board 5.
According to AGM Paez, Laguna defeated Manila, 4.5-2.5, in blitz format and 7-all deadlock in the fast-paced game.
Manila dropped to fourth with a 1-1 draw along with Quezon City, Isabela, Caloocan, Cagayan and Cavite.
Meanwhile, Iloilo, Zamboanga and Negros lead the Southern Conference with a 2-0 win-loss record.
