ELON, NC – Baseball from Elon University Parker Haskin, Kyle Greenler, Alex Iadisernia and Joe Savino are selected team captains for the 2022 season, as voted by their teammates.
“A well-deserved honor for these players,” said Elon . head coach Mike Kennedy. “Each of these guys represent Elon Baseball at the highest level, both on and off the field.”
Haskin, a sophomore redshirt catcher from Palm Beach Gardens, Florida, made 25 starts in 33 games, hitting .241 (21-for-87) last season with a .345 slugging percentage and a .359 on-base percentage. He finished 2021 with two home runs, three doubles, 14 runs, nine RBIs and 13 walks and finished third in the CAA in sacrifice bunts (6) and sacrifice bunts per game (0.18). He scored the tying run late in the game against Western Carolina on April 28 to help the Phoenix to a 4-3 win over the Catamounts. His first home run of his career came on April 30 against the College of Charleston, a grand slam that highlighted a 14-5 series opening win over the visiting Cougars.
Greenler, a junior pitcher in the redshirt from Georgetown, Massachusetts, finished 2021 1-5 with two saves and a 4.17 ERA in 22 relief appearances for the maroon and gold. He gave up 23 runs (17 earned) on 32 hits and 11 walks, while striking out 32 batters in 36.2 innings pitched. The righthander ended on May 8 with a season-high five strikeouts in Wake Forest when the Phoenix defeated the Demon Deacons 5-2 in Winston-Salem. 3.1 innings pitched. On May 26 during the CAA Championship Tournament, he pitched 2.0 shutout innings to help Elon with a 7-3 victory over number 6 seed William & Mary. He struckout two Tribe batters, walked no and gave up only one basehit.
A 2021 Collegiate Baseball Freshman All-American and CAA Co-Rookie of the Year, Iadisernia is a red shirt sophomore outfielder from Jackson, NJ. He added CAA First Team and All-Rookie honors after leading the Phoenix at the plate and finishing third in the conference with a batting average of .368. In addition, he finished in the Top 10 in the league in home runs (10), runs scored (39), doubles (13), on-base percentage (.448) and slugging percentage (0.626). Iadisernia broke the program’s first homerun record and was named CAA Teammate of the Week on April 13. He finished the 2021 campaign with 21 multi-hit games, eight multi-RBI games, had a 14-game hit streak and one game reached the base series.
Savino is a sophomore pitcher in the red shirt, hailing from Ronkonkoma, NY Elon’s strikeout leader last season with 70, he was first in the CAA and 15th nationally with a strikeout-to-walk ratio of 7.00. He was also first in the league and 26th in the country with 1.51 walks allowed per nine innings, finished fourth in the conference with a 1.09 WHIP and fifth with 10.56 strikeouts per nine innings. The rightful pitcher made nine starts in 12 appearances and went 0-3 with a 3.02 ERA. He held a No. 8-ranked East Carolina team scoreless to 5.2 innings of relief on March 26 and finished with a season-high 13 strikeouts in a 6.0-inning start at UNCW on April 2. Savino got the start against UNCW on May 27. and hit 7.1 innings while holding the tournament host to two runs (one earned) on five hits and two walks while striking out eight batters.
Elon opens the 2022 season on February 18-20 as the Phoenix welcomes Fairfield for a three-game run at Latham Park. In the season, the team will play 37 games, as well as the CAA Championship Tournament in 2022.
