Cricket Cell Phone Plans Overview 2022

While Cricket Wireless did not make our ratings for the Best Cell Phone Plans of 2022, we wanted to provide you with an overview of the services and plans it offers. The company is one of AT&T’s prepaid cellular offerings and uses AT&T’s towers. Cricket offers unlimited texting and calling and the use of AT&T’s 5G network, with 2 gigabytes (GB), 10 GB, and unlimited data options starting at $30 per month. It also offers a four-line, unlimited data family plan for $100 per month, although data speed is limited to 8 megabits per second (Mbps).

Fast Facts:

  • Available Data tethering option

  • Data only plans available

Since AT&T owns Cricket, Cricket customers use the company’s towers. Thus, anywhere AT&T-owned 5G towers exist, Cricket Wireless customers will have 5G service with a compatible device. Where 5G isn’t available, Cricket customers will have access to the much larger LTE network.

Cricket’s primary attraction is its low-cost unlimited data plans. However, there are some important caveats to the cheaper plans. Data speeds are limited to 8 Mbps on the basic unlimited plan called Cricket Core, which is well below average for data speeds these days. Cricket might also slow data during busy periods. You can’t use your device as a mobile hotspot, either.

To remove the data speed caps, you’ll need the unlimited plus plan (Cricket More), which also offers a free HBO Max subscription and 150 GB cloud storage – but also costs more.

Cricket also offers data-only plans for other devices like tablets and laptops that are compatible with its network. 25 GB of data is available for $35 per month, and 100 GB for $50 per month. However, these plans do not roll over, and after the data allotment is exhausted, you must wait until the next billing period starts.

Cricket Wireless plans are relatively straightforward and the service is prepaid. All plans include unlimited calling and texting, with various data (and service) options of 2 GB, 10 GB, unlimited, and unlimited with 15 GB of mobile hotspot data. The Cricket 2 GB plan is $30 per month, the 10 GB is $40, per month, and unlimited data is $55 per month, plus $5 more for the data tethering option. There are per line discounts on multi-line plans, up to a maximum number of five lines on a single plan.

All plans regardless of data caps have access to AT&T’s 5G network where available. On the lower-priced, unlimited plan, data speeds are limited to 8 Mbps and video limited to standard definition quality (1.5 Mbps). On the data capped plans, data speeds drop to 128 kilobits per second (Kbps) when your data runs out.

Cricket has two unlimited plans called Cricket Core and Cricket More, starting at $55 and $60 per month respectively. Both plans offer access to the AT&T 5G network where available – which covers most cities and connecting highways across the US, especially in the eastern US. Where 5G isn’t available, Cricket customers will connect to the much more widespread LTE data network.

The Cricket Core plan allows you to get four lines for $100, which is cheaper than many of the options in our Best Cell Phone Plans of 2022. However, in order to get the discount price, you’ll need to accept slow data speeds of 8 Mbps, possibly even slower if the network is busy.

To get around those speed limits, and also gain the option to use your device as a mobile hotspot with up to 15 GB of data, choose the $60 per month plan, which on the same four-line plan is $32 more a month with the multi-line discount.

Cricket also offers additional benefits with Cricket More, including free HBO Max with ads subscription and 150 GB of cloud storage space.

How To Upgrade Your Cell Phone Plan

You can change plans with Cricket Wireless through the Cricket app or the company’s website. If you choose for the changes to take effect immediately, you can make as many changes as you wish. Only one feature change can be scheduled to take effect the next billing cycle, however.

With phone upgrades, there are some eligibility requirements that you must meet, including: having a monthly plan that costs $30/mo. or more, and the phone must be new and purchased from Cricket directly. A fee of $25 is charged at the time of upgrade, and you will not be able to upgrade your phone for another 180 days.

Cricket’s plans offer up to five lines and range from $30-150 per month for the 2GB data plan, $40-130 for the 10 GB plan, $55-125 for the unlimited plan (Cricket Core), and $60-160 for the unlimited plan with 15 GB of mobile hotspot use (Cricket More).

For multiple lines, the unlimited plans are the far better deal, and the better option as data is shared. On four or five lines, each line is billed at $25 per month for Cricket Core and $32 per month for Cricket More. Choosing Cricket More also adds a free HBO Max with ads subscription and 150 GB of cloud storage.

There are no setup fees with Cricket when you purchase online. However, at the time of purchase, you will pay for both the device and the first month’s service. You can also opt, in some cases, to prepay for three months of service of the Cricket More $60 plan to get a discount on the purchase of your device. You will still be responsible for the sales taxes on the device at the time of checkout.

If you decide to visit a store, a $25 activation fee will be added to the final total.

Cricket Wireless offers three optional features as well as two “as needed” add-ons for specific circumstances.

  • Cricket Protect: An optional device protection plan that covers damage to the device or loss, including $29 cracked screen repair in some markets.
  • Mobile Hotspot: An optional service that allows you to use your device as a Wi-Fi hotspot for other devices, like a tablet or computer.
  • Cricket International: Those who frequently call overseas should consider the international calling add-on. It allows for unlimited calling to 35 countries around the world, and in the higher tier plan, unlimited picture and video (MMS) messaging.

Customers on data-capped plans can purchase an additional GB of high-speed data for $10. If you need international calling options for a specific country, Cricket also offers country-specific international calling, which offers a pool of minutes and unlimited picture and video messaging.

Cricket Wireless’ 5G is available nationwide in major cities and along most major highways, especially in the eastern part of the United States. Where 5G is not available, Cricket customers connect to the 4G LTE network.

Does Cricket Wireless Offer a Money-Back Guarantee?

Yes, but it’s restrictive. Cricket’s money-back guarantee only applies to any device and accessories purchased that are unopened and/or unactivated.
