Rhinos top National Rugby 7’s Championship 2021

Team Rhinos lorded it over the opposition to win the 2021 National Rugby 7’s Championship.

The National Rugby 7’s Championship is the biggest annual event for the Cambodia Federation of Rugby (CFR). The 2021 edition of the tournament was held on January 23 at the Chea Sim High School in Phnom Penh.

It was also the first major event for the CFR since the complete re-opening of Cambodia two months ago. The tournament was supposed to be held last year, but was delayed due to the Covid-19 pandemic.

The second spot in the Men’s competition went to Sisowath Knights, while Krabey Prey settled for third place.

ChildFund Reconnect, meanwhile, won the first place in the Women’s competition, with the team from Battambang province settling for the second spot.

Some 14 Men’s, Women’s and Youth teams competed in the one-day tournament. The participants came from Phnom Penh, Battambang, Siem Reap and several other provinces, according to the CFR.

It was held to select the rugby players who will represent Cambodia in international competitions, especially the upcoming 2021 and 2023 Southeast Asian Games.

Hun Hean, team captain of the Rhinos, said he was happy that everything went according to their plan.

“We worked well together to win the tournament. But we are not there yet. We will work harder, we will develop more resources to improve our performance for the future,” he said after the final match.

Lun Samedy, Secretary-General of CFR, he was happy with the efforts shown by all of the participants.

“Everyone worked hard. They competed to the best of their abilities,” he said. “You should continue to train for the next tournament,” Samdy added, while addressing the participating teams.

The CFR, according to him, is planning to hold another rugby tournament two or three months from now.

Tuy Bun Hoeun, Deputy Director of the Department of Physical Education and Sports at the Ministry of Education, Youth and Sports (MoEYS), reiterated their agency’s support to rugby and other sports in the country.

“We have provided funding and other support to all 42 sports federations in Cambodia, and we will continue to do so,” the MoEYS official said. “This is very important, especially with the approaching SEA Games.”

The CFR has been holding regular rugby 7’s tournaments the last few years. Hanuman topped the 2020 edition of the tournament.

Last week, the CFR signed a partnership agreement with ChildFund Rugby, which will see the Australia-headquartered organization helping develop rugby in Cambodia in the next four years.
