Swimming and diving teams excel at Clarke-Oconee meet | Sports

North Oconee High School swimming and diving reigned victorious once again during the Clarke-Oconee area championship last weekend.

The North Oconee boys and girls teams won the 2021-22 area championship, held last Saturday at the University of Georgia’s Ramsey Center.

The girls totaled 226 points while the boys reached 195 points, good for a team total of 421 points.

This marks the 13th consecutive season where the North Oconee girls won the event. For the North Oconee boys, this was their seventh victory at the annual meet in eight years.

In the girls competition, Oconee County High School placed second with 114 points, Prince Avenue Christian School was fifth with 17 points and Athens Academy finished sixth with 10 points.

The Athens Academy boys placed third with 74 points while Oconee County High School was fifth with 55 points.

OCHS placed third overall (169 combined points) while Athens Academy was fifth (84 points) and Prince Avenue Christian was sixth (17 points).

NOHS’s team of Gavin Jones, TJ Lu, Eli Allen and David Duncan won the boys 200-yard medley relay.

Sidney Lyn, Kailey Teyner, Nicole Avelar and Ansley Halbach won the girls 200-yard medley relay for NOHS.

Sam Krosner, a senior at NOHS, won the boys 200-yard freestyle while Titan Tide teammate Rebecca Pursner placed first in the girls 200-yard freestyle.

Jones won the boys 200-yard IM. Avelar was victorious in the girls 200-yard IM.

Daniel Huang of Athens Academy placed first in the boys 50-yard freestyle. Mary Mustard of NOHS won the girls 50 yard freestyle event.

NOHS junior William Johnson won the boys 100-yard butterfly while Olivia DellaTorre of OCHS won the event for the girls division.

Jones won the boys 100-yard freestyle event with a finals time of 46.96, which is a new program record. Halbach won the girls 100 yard freestyle.

Simon Casey of OCHS won the boys 500 yard freestyle race. Pursner won the girls 500 yard freestyle.

NOHS’s team of Jones, Lu, Johnson and Krosner won the boys’ 200-yard freestyle relay race. NOHS won that event in the girls division, too, thanks to the team of Mustard, Lyn, Pursner and Halbach.

Casey won the boys 100 yard backstroke event. Halbach won the same race for the girls division.

Krosner took the boys 100-yard breaststroke event. DellaTorre won the girls 100-yard breaststroke.

Athens Academy won the boys 400-yard freestyle relay with the team of Garrett Kennedy, Robbie Dillon, Will Hines and Huang.

NOHS won the girls 400-yard freestyle relay with Pursner, Avelar, Mustard and Teyner representing the Titan Tide.

Saturday’s event was a home meet for the Titan Tide. It also marked their last home competition of the year, so their nine seniors were honored.

Those seniors consist of Jones, Krosner, Lyn, Emilia Mohorn, Simone Phillips, Kalen Qadri, Kian Qadri, Karlee Wells and Katherine Xiao.

This year’s Georgia High School Association swimming and diving championships will be held Feb. 3-5.

Those events will be hosted at the Georgia Tech Aquatic Center.
