Katy ISD qualifies 23 athletes, 14 relays for state swimming

Katy ISD sends another strong group of athletes to the UIL state swimming and diving championships Feb. 18-19 at the University of Texas. The list includes to of the top-ranked relays in Class 6A.

Taylor clocked the second-best regional time in the state last week and takes the No. 2 seed to Austin in the 200 yard medley relay. The team of Logan Pack, Reinaldo Obando Machado, Nick Schmid and Andrew Lee finished the race in one minute, 32.76 seconds at the Cy-Fair ISD Natatorium. The same group finished the meet with a 3:05.28 in the 400-yard freestyle relay, taking the No. 3 seed to state.

Jordan sophomore Kaeli White could bring home multiple medals from state after recording the No. 2 time in two events at the Region VI-5A championships in Cypress. White swam a 1:52.14 in the 200-yard freestyle and a 5:00.34 in the 500-yard freestyle.

The Warriors will have a busy state meet after sweeping the regional team championships. The girls qualified all three relays for state, while the boys will send both freestyle relays as automatic qualifiers.

Freshman Emma Aumaugher (200 IM, 100 fly) and junior Kaiden Duvall (1-meter diving) were among Jordan’s automatic qualifiers, with Paetow’s Kaleb Velazquez (1-meter diving) earned a state spot as well. The top two in each swimming event and top three divers automatically advanced to the state meet.

The top eight times across the state, excluding automatic qualifiers, earned a call-up to state. Class 5A call-ups included Jordan freshmen Violet Hardy (200 free) and Haley Kim (100 breast), and sophomores Kai Walker (200 IM, 500 free) and Sebastian Leal (50 free, 100 free).

Tompkins qualified four relays for state, including all three boys events. Seniors Matthew Aigner and Daniel Barrientos both advanced to state in diving, while freshman Carter Gray (200 IM, 100 breast) and senior Jace Walker (100 free) earned call-ups in swimming.

Cinco Ranch had three state call-ups, with the boys 200 free relay joined individually by senior Brandon Guo (100 free) and freshman Marley Barnard (100 breast).

Katy sophomore Avery Coates is headed to state in diving, while junior Claire Hegar earned an automatic spot in the 100-yard backstroke.

Seven Lakes sends the girls 400 free relay and boys medley relay, both earning call-ups. Freshman Connor Jones qualified in the 200 free and 500 free, with junior Kailey Koval ranking among the top regional divers and junior Taylor Craft getting a call-up in the 100 free.

Schmid qualified automatically in the 200-yard individual medley and 100-yard butterfly for Taylor, with Pack qualifying in the backstroke and earning a call-up in the 50 free. Lee was called-up in the 200 free, while junior Mariana Diaz Ponce will represent the Taylor girls after a call-up in the 100-yard breaststroke.
