The cancellation of the New Zealand Masters Games in Dunedin earlier this month opened up an opportunity for Invercargill to host a revised volleyball tournament at the weekend.

Volley South chairwoman Donna Milne said after the announcement the games were canned she contacted Volleyball Otago to see if it would still run the event with a revised format, as South had five teams set to travel and participate.

It declined but gave Volley South their blessing to host.

Some of the south’s top master’s volleyball talent took part in the event, held on both Saturday and Sunday, with teams from as far away as Christchurch.

Twelve teams took part in three complete sections, men’s, mixed, and females.

“A lot of players in the teams that competed have taken the opportunity to be involved in the weekend because they just want to get life back to as normal as they can. We are not in a lockdown, we are in a situation where this is our new normal, so with pods of less than a hundred in each area meant we could pull this off,” Milne said.

Christchurch based Caspian club president Vahid Fanipour said it was first the time the club had attended an event in Invercargill and it was a great tournament.

The team won the mixed competitive section.

The men’s final was a nail-biting five sets between Collabor8 Black and the Volley South Spikers. The first two sets went to the Volley South Spikers, but Collabora8 Black dug in and won the third and fourth set by a close two points.

The fifth and final set, to 15 points, saw teams go point for point until Collaobr8 Blue pulled ahead to win the title.

With no spectators allowed, Milne said “using the stadiums live-streaming technology was a no brainer, and they were happy to sort for us it meant friends, and families were to witness all finals, and some pool play games from the comfort of their home.

“It’s vital to our sports survival, and our players wellbeing to keep playing, developing, growing, and holding competitions and events.

“We are fortunate to have such an amazing culture here in Southland, where we all roll up our sleeves and make things happen, that’s what excites me to continue volunteering under these conditions,” Milne said.
