Mastodons Travel To Muncie for MIVA Match against No. 7 Ball State

FORT WAYNE, Ind. † The Purdue Fort Wayne men’s volleyball team travels to Muncie, Ind. for a Midwestern Intercollegiate Volleyball Association match against No. 7 Ball State on Thursday, Feb. 17 (7 pm).

Thursday marks the start of a stretch where six of the next seven matches are on the road for the Mastodons.

Know Your Foe
Ball State heads into Thursday’s match as the No. 7 ranked team in the country. The Cardinals are the highest ranked team MIVA team in the most recent AVCA top 15 poll.

The Cardinals are off to an 8-1 start (2-0 MIVA) this season. The most notable wins came against No. 1 ranked Hawaii. The Cardinals defeated the Rainbow Warriors twice on Jan. 29 (3-0) and on Jan. 31 (3-2). The Cardinals also have road wins against No. 9 BYU (3-1) in Provo, Utah and against MIVA foe No. 6 Lewis (3-0) in Romeoville, Ill.

Outside hitter Kaleb Jenness is leading the way for the Cardinals. The two time MIVA Offensive Player of the Week is second on the team in kills per set (4.80), which is second in the NCAA, and second in hitting percentage at .375. Quinn Isaacson leads the country in assists per set at 12.10. Isaacson also leads the Cardinals in digs per set at 2.26. Felix Egharevba leads the Cardinals in blocks per set at 1.32.

‘Down in the NCAA
Individually, the ‘Dons rank in the top 10 in several categories in the NCAA. Jon Diedrich tied for first in the NCAA in total kills (183), second in the country in kills in a five set match (26), and fifth in in kills per set (4.07) . Troy Gooch is eighth in digs per set (2.32), and tied for ninth in digs in a four set match (15). Sean Califf is eighth in the country in assists per set (9.88).

Setting Up For a Big Match
Thursday’s match features the top two statistical setters in the MIVA. Ball State’s Quinn Isaacson leads the country and the MIVA in assists per set (12.10). Sean Califf is second in the MIVA and eighth in the country in assists per set (9.88).

Up Next
The Mastodons are back in action on Sunday, Feb. 20 (3 pm) when they travel to Columbus, Ohio. for a match against Ohio State. The Buckeyes are set to host Loyola Chicago on Feb. 17 (7 pm) before the ‘Dons come to town.
