Chess: 4th Uganda Open Tees Off in Kampala

The long awaited final Grand Prix circuit event qualifier for Russia 2022 Chess Olympiad, the Uganda Open 4th edition, has today kicked off at Mackinnon All Suites (former Xanadu Hotel) in Kampala.

Being among the top guns in the region, UCF president and FIDE Executive board member, Eng Mwaka Emmanuel, is optimistic about Ugandan players win given their zeal.

“We are using this event as a qualifier for the Olympiad in Russia and we don’t expect many surprises,” Mwaka told journalists at the event’s grand opening in Kampala.

“We hope that the Ugandans will defend their tough since we are the chess powerhouse in the region.” He continued that, “We are one of the top guns in the continent, so we expect the Ugandan players to win and the most consistent players will qualify through the Grand Prix system and then a round robin.”

Running for six days, the classical open (eight rounds), Blitz and rapid tourney is part of the events bouquet during the Uganda Chess Festival “as we celebrate the golden jubilee of the federation.”
