The Bowling Green Bucs and Lady Bucs entered postseason play last Tuesday in the South State tournament held at Copiah Academy in Gallman, Mississippi.
The Lady Bucs opened tournament action by facing the St. Joe Academy Lady Bruins. Bowling Green took an early 10-2 lead after one quarter. The Lady Bucs outscored St. Joe 17-9 in the second and led 27-11 at the half. Bowling Green extended their lead with a 15-4 third-quarter advantage. The Lady Bruins outscored BGS 12-11 in the fourth quarter, but the Lady Bucs finished with a 53-27 win.
Chloe Bertrand led with 11 points and 2 steals while Anna Claire Crowe and Bridget Devall each had 10 points, 3 rebounds and 2 steals. Kaka Seal scored 8 points with 2 steals, Bailey Devall had 5 points, 5 rebounds and 5 assists, Peyton Dupuy added 4 points and 2 assists and Hope Crowe totaled 3 points and 2 rebounds.
Friday the Lady Bucs faced the Lady Colonels of Copiah Academy on their home court. The Lady Bucs raced out to a 16-2 lead after one quarter of play. Copiah Academy captured the second quarter with a slim 7-6 margin, but the Lady Bucs held a 22-9 halftime lead. At the direction of head coach Barry Seal, the Lady Bucs held the ball and ran clock for a large portion of the second half. The Lady Colonels outscored BGS 9-5 in the third and each team scored 8 points in the fourth. Bowling Green earned a convincing 35-26 win that put them in the South State tournament finals.
Bailey Devall led the Lady Bucs with 19 points. Bridget Devall scored 4 points with Chloe Bertrand, Kaka Seal, Anna Claire Crowe and Claire Wascom each scoring 3 points.
In Saturday’s championship game, the Lady Bucs met the Central Hinds Lady Cougars. Central Hinds led 14-13 after the first quarter. The Lady Bucs outscored the Lady Cougars 8-6 in the second and led 21-20 at the half. Central Hinds captured a low-scoring third quarter with a 7-4 advantage. Each team scored 6 points in the fourth with the Lady Bucs coming up on the short end of a 33-31 final.
Bailey Devall led with 9 points and 4 rebounds, Kaka Seal had 6 points and 4 rebounds with Chloe Bertrand scoring 5 points to go with 2 steals. Claire Wascom had 4 points and 2 steals, Anna Claire Crowe added 3 points and 2 steals while Bridget Devall (5 rebounds) and Hope Crowe each finished with 2 points.
The Lady Bucs advance to the State Tournament this week at Brookhaven Academy as the #2 seed from the South.
On Tuesday the Bucs opened postseason play against the St. Joe Academy Bruins from Madison, Mississippi. The Bruins held an early 14-11 lead after one period of play. The Bucs rebounded with an 11-8 second quarter advantage and the two teams were tied at 22-22 at the half. St. Joe dominated the third quarter by outscoring the Bucs 17-5. Each team scored 11 points in the fourth quarter as St. Joe finished with a 50-38 win. The Bucs’ season ended with the first-round tournament loss.
In the final game, Nathan Jenkins led with 19 points. Dray Killingsworth and Zeke Burford each had 5 points, Connor Dedon scored 4, Will Hollywood totaled 3 and Peyton Sumrall finished with 2 points.
