City Beach volleyball courts are set to find a brand new home as it moves on from its iconic spot in the CBD.
The courts, currently located on the corner of Pirie and Frome Streets has recently been sold, bringing on the next chapter for the much-loved center for volleyball pros and amateurs alike.
Volleyball SA is looking to shift the courts into Adelaide’s parklands, as part of a brand new multi-use Urban Beach Hub.
The new facility will likely be located in Bonython Park, with Council having approved the repurposing of a section of the former netball courts, subject to appropriate funding being secured.
Volleyball SA General Manager, Karla Della Pietra, said she is looking forward to the next chapter for beach volleyball in Adelaide.
“We have a vision for an exciting and inclusive Urban Beach Hub in the parklands, which will give the community more opportunities to get healthy and active in a central location.” Pietra said.
“The City of Adelaide have supported Volleyball SA from the very early stages in finding a new site for our much-loved beach volleyball facility, and we look forward to working with the council as we develop our new, multi-use site.”
The City of Adelaide this week announced the sale of the central CBD site has been finalised. In place of the courts, NEXTDC Limited, Australia’s leading data center provider, will construct a $100 million data center facility.
This will expand on NEXTDC’s national network of 14 world class data centres, and has been cited as a positive investment to support some of South Australia’s key industries.
Development at the current City Beach site is set to commence in the latter half of 2022.
