Men’s Tennis Taken Down by Tartans, 5-4

ORLANDO, Fla. – The Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) men’s tennis team jumped out to a 1-0 lead by capturing the first doubles match, but Carnegie Mellon University won the next two matches and did not trail again in defeating the Engineers 5-4 in a non league match. The Tartans even their overall record at 4-4 while RPI is now 2-2.

Rensselaer’s duo of Max Safanov and Igor Visnevskij had an 8-6 win at No. 2 doubles, but Carnegie Mellon won the first and third pairings.

freshman Aiden Drover Mattinen tied things up for the Engineers with a 6-0, 6-2 win at No. 1 and the teams split the next two matches, including a 6-3, 6-3 win by Visnevskij at No. 4 to make it 3-3. The Tartans were victorious in the next two matches to close things out. Rensselaer’s Emilio Van Cotthem won the final match 7-6 (7-1), 5-7, 3-1 at No. 2.

RPI is back on the court on Wednesday morning against Case Western Reserve University (8am), while Carnegie Mellon plays Kenyon College on Tuesday at 3pm.
