Omaha, Neb. † The Bluejay Baseball erupted at the plate with nine runs in the final four frames to defeat Central Arkansas 10-3 on Thursday, March 10.
The win pushed Creighton’s record to 5-6 on the season, while UCA fell to 4-8.
Trailing 3-0 after two innings, the Bluejays got on the board in the top of the third as sophomore Nolan Clifford walked, went to second on a single by junior Andrew Meggs† With two outs junior Jared Wegner reached on an infield single, then a throwing error allowed Clifford to cross the plate.
After getting into the Central Arkansas bullpen in the sixth inning, Creighton pulled even. Junior Jack Grace opened the inning with a walk, then freshman Nolan Sailors put runners at the corners with a single through the right side. One out later sophomore Kyle Hess pulled Creighton within a run with an RBI ground out. After a pair of walks filled the bases, sophomore Alan Roden lined an RBI single to first, knotting the game at 3-3.
Following a hiccup in the second that led to UCA’s three runs, Creighton’s junior starter Dylan Tebrake was on cruise control. Tebrake limited the Bears to two hits from the third inning through the sixth.
Creighton’s offensive momentum continued in the seventh as Sailors reached on a two-out infield single to open the flood gates. Senior Chris Esposito followed with a two-run blast to left field. The next Bluejay hitter was struck by a pitch, then Clifford singled through the right side. Meggs continued the fun with a three-run homer also clearing the left field wall to give Creighton an 8-3 edge.
The Bluejays’ final two runs came in the eighth as Wegner walked, freshman Brant Votho singled, then Grace loaded the bags with another base on balls. A sacrifice fly from Sailors and an RBI single by Esposito pushed the Creighton edge to 10-3.
Tebrake earned the win (2-1), limiting UCA to three runs on four hits in six innings. Relievers Paul Bergstrom and Alex Loosbrock closed the door with three scoreless frames.
Central Arkansas reliever took the loss (0-1), allowing three runs on three hits in 1.2 frames.
Esposito and Meggs led Creighton with three hits and three RBI each.
Creighton returns to the diamond on Saturday, March 12 as the Bluejays face UT-Martin at 12:00 pm, then play Central Arkansas at 3:00 pm.
