Busy Pre-League Slate for Men’s Tennis Ends with Four Matches this Weekend

ANNAPOLIS, Md. –– Another four-match weekend is ahead of the Navy men’s tennis team as the Mids will play split-squad doubleheaders on Saturday and Sunday. Navy (16-4) begins the weekend Saturday with a 10 am match at home against Temple (4-3) and an 11 am match at William & Mary (6-4). On Sunday, the Mids will play host to the District of Columbia (2-4) at 10 am and play at Old Dominion (7-4), the 48th-ranked team in the latest computer national ranking, at 11 am

Navy’s home matches will be played at the Tose Family Tennis Center.

Live results will be available from each of Navy’s two road matches.

navy (16-4)
The Mids split a pair of matches Saturday, losing a 4-3 match at NJIT and winning a 4-2 decision against Drexel at home. Navy had won the doubles point (3-0) against the Highlanders and lost the doubles point (2-1) to the Dragons.

Luke Garner (Fr., Arnold, Md.) was the lone Mid to win both of his matches against NJIT. After he combined with Gavin Segraves (Jr., Charlottesville, Va.) for a 6-4 win at No. 2 doubles, he recorded a 6-3, 7-5 victory at No. 4 singles.

Derrick Thompson (Sr., Towson, Md.) and Sasha Panyan (So., Lutherville, Md.) each won a pair of matches against Drexel. The players first teamed for a 6-3 win at No. 1 doubles, then lost a combined three games in winning straight-set matches at Nos. 1 (Thompson) and 4 (Panyan) singles.

Following play this weekend, Navy will be off from competition until it opens Patriot League play March 27 against Boston U.

Temple (4-3)
The Owls travel to Annapolis with a 4-3 record on the season. Temple has lost a match to 34th-ranked Princeton by the score of 5-2 and recorded a 5-2 victory over a Fairleigh Dickinson team that Navy beat by the score of 6-1.

Navy leads the all-time series with Temple by the count of 24-4. The Owls defeated the Mids by the score of 4-3 in 2018, Navy defeated Temple by the same score in 2019 and the Mids won a 4-1 decision in 2020.

William & Mary (6-4)
The Tribe enters Saturday’s match with a 6-4 mark this season. William & Mary has posted a 7-0 victory over Richmond, a team Navy lost a 4-3 decision to earlier this year.

Navy holds a 31-10 advantage in the series with William & Mary, but the Tribe has posted victories over the Mids in each of the last six matches that were played from the 1996 to 2017 seasons.

university of the District of Columbia (2-4)
The NCAA Division II-Firebirds have posted a 2-4 record this season. UDC will be playing its only match this year against an NCAA Division I foe when it faces Navy on Sunday.

The match also pairs the teams against each other for the first time.

Old Dominion (7-4)
the no. 48 Monarchs have won three matches in a row to raise their record on the year to 7-4. ODU has defeated Penn State (5-2) and 60th-ranked Furman (4-0) and lost to Auburn (6-1) and top-ranked Tennessee (4-0) this season.

Individually, Francois Le Tallec is ranked 96th nationally in singles.

Navy and Old Dominion will be meeting for the first time since the spring of 2015 and playing a match in Norfolk for the first time since 2013. The Monarchs hold an 11-4 edge in the series with the Mids.
