Northwestern’s John Courtemanche’s late dives earn Class S title

WALLINGFORD — Northwestern’s John Courtemanche is Class S diving champion.

Courtemanche led Shepaug Valley’s Giacomo Colangelo by seven points after eight dives in competition at Sheehan High. Courtemanche extended his advantage the last three rounds to finish on top 438.10-404.40.

“I do try to save dives for the end,” said Courtemanche, a senior. “Me and my coach (Mary DiMauro) have this thing, so it goes in a flow. I don’t do a reverse one and a half before I do a reverse dive. It goes up in difficulty.”

Courtemanche has a relaxed approach to diving.

“I began diving freshman year,” he said. “I had a flipping background on trampoline like with gymnastics but on my own free time. It translated well. I still get nervous, but it’s exciting.”

Courtemanche is looking forward to the State Open that will be held March 17 in Middletown.

“Last year, and the year before, they didn’t have states or the Open,” he said. “As a freshman I was second at states and I think I was 16th at Open. ]It is a great experience diving with the best.”

After the Open, Courtemanche, a four-time Berkshire League champion, will step off the board and turn that dedication toward a new form.

“I’m really focused on art school,” he said. “It’s something I really like and I’m going to pursue. Diving is great. It was my first time winning it (Class S). I have been working hard all year for it. It feels good to have it happen.”

Griffin Casey from Wilton scored a 464,002 to capture the Class M title in Middletown. Avon’s Sarah Grady was second 389,203 and Corey Schad from Middletown third 387,004.

South Windsor’s Andrew Bell won Class L with a score of 540,302. He placed fifth as a freshman at 434.40. Jonah Genser from Hall was second (4:57.103) and New Canaan’s Jack Krug placed third (445.954).

The Class LL diving championship will be held March 14 in Middletown at 5:30.
