Beach Volleyball Sweeps Day Two or Beach Burrow Bash

BOCA RATON, Fla. – With a 5-0 win over Austin Peay and a 3-2 win over Palm Beach Atlantic, the No. 26 FGCU beach volleyball team swept day two of the FAU Beach Burrow Bash on Saturday at the FAU Beach Volleyball Complex. With the wins, the Eagles improved to 5-3 overall on the season.

“We struggled with the elements in our first match, but we pulled out some tough wins in the second match. Every pair had a third set or a two point win, so I was glad to see us finish games,” said head coach Chris Sweat† “Emma and Kaitlyn had a great weekend going 4-0 and they’re really coming together as a strong pair for us.”

The Green and Blue opened the day with the morning win over Austin Peay as it swept the match 5-0. The pair of Jaci Carpenter and Lexie Hamilton had the match clinching point at the No. 2 flight. Emma Hansen and Kaitlyn Luebbers picked up the first win of the match at No. 2 before Shelby Beisner and Elizabeth Richmond won the no. 5 flight.

In the afternoon, the Eagles had the match win secured 3-0 before the Sailfish won the final two flights. Kacie Johnson and Maddison Parmelly had the match clinching point in the No. 2 flight winning 21-13 and 21-18.

The Eagles are set to return to action next weekend at the College of Charleston Classic on Saturday and Sunday, March 12-13, in Mt. Pleasant, South Carolina. On Saturday, the Eagles will face Coastal Carolina (11:30 AM) and Jacksonville (4:30 PM) on Saturday before then taking on host College of Charleston (9:30 AM) and Eastern Kentucky (11:30 AM) on Sunday .

Chris Sweat is in his third season as head coach of the FGCU beach volleyball program after spending the prior five seasons as an assistant coach. A member of VolleyballMag.com’s Under 40 Coaching Hotshots list in January 2020, he led the Eagles to a 4-0 start in 2020 prior to the COVID-19 shutdown and has compiled a 24-18 record to open his head coaching tenure.

ABOUT FGCU
FGCU teams have combined to win an incredible 89 conference regular season and tournament titles in just 14+ seasons at the Division I level. Additionally, in just 10 seasons of DI postseason eligibility, the Eagles have had a combined 43 teams or individuals compete in NCAA championships. Eight FGCU programs have earned a top-25 national ranking in their respective sport – including women’s basketball (No. 20, 2021-22), beach volleyball (No. 20, 2022) and both men’s soccer (2018, 2019) and women’s soccer (2018) as three of the most recent. FGCU also collectively earned a record 3.50 GPA in the classroom in the fall 2020 semester and has outperformed the general University undergraduate population for 25 consecutive semesters. The past five semesters (Fall 2019 – Fall 2021) each saw another milestone reached as all 15 programs achieved a 3.0-or-higher team GPA in each. The Eagles also served an all-time high 7,200 volunteer hours in 2017 – being recognized as one of two runners-up for the inaugural NACDA Community Service Award presented by the Fiesta Bowl.
